Blower switch in a PRS
« on: February 21, 2011, 10:31:47 AM »
I've got my tech sticking some Rebel Yells in my PRS at the moment, and while he was doing it I wanted him to fit a blower switch, like the Tom Andersons or Guthrie Govan signature Suhrs.

I've got a push-push pot, and the idea is that with the pot down you get normal PRS wiring (5 way rotary) and with it up it goes straight to full bridge humbucker, bypassing the pots.

My tech is having trouble getting it to happen, because the rotary switch is still shifting the ground, so the blower switch has a different sound depending on where the 5-way is set. Does anyone know a way round this?

That's a tricky one! Obviously the rotary is selecting coils then the blower switch sends the tapped or series output to the jack ... I'll have a quick think about it but it sounds like you don't have enough poles on the push-pull switch to achieve exactly what you want as you need to shift the coil grounds as well as bypassing the volume control.

Put the switch on the pickup live before the rotary with one pole and break the ground from the rotary at the same time with the other.  If you were using a mini switch it would be easier because you could get a 4-pole switch, but it can be done with a 2-pole.
So many pickups, so little time

Thanks Frank and Phil!

I read Phil's answer to my tech on the phone, because I barely understand it, and he seems to think he'll crack it now.

ok, this gets complicated

http://www.stewmac.com/freeinfo/Electronics/Color_codes/i-prs.html

.. says that Red wire is the N/S coil connection (so this can't be grounded or we get a coil tapped pickup) and the White is the Hot

So to get the desired effect (humbucker coils in series to output jack with no volume control) we need to

1. disconnect red from the rotary to disable coil tapping and
2. switch jack socket tip connection from vol pot out to bridge pickup white (hot)

Quick scribble kind of looks right, can someone idiot check this for me?
