What does one look at when taking a look at a pickup.    Reading around I have learned that Dimarzio leaves a LOT to be desired.....as does Rio Grande.   Duncan is kind of middle of the road with companies like BK, Fralin and Holmes on the top of the perch.

Exactly what makes a well made pickup?

I think probably the most important thing would be having the pups hand (scatter)wound which the big manufacturers don't do. The BKP Crawlers and Riff Raffs I have definitely have clarity, range and punch that other brand pups (Gibson, SD, DiMarzio, EMG passive) I have used have not had.

The other important thing is to be able to talk/email the manufacturer (Tim in BKPs case) to discuss just what sound you're looking for. If the (extensive) current range doesn't nail exactly what you want Tim will do a special wind or change a magnet to accommodate you. He usually gets it right but if you are not happy he will exchange it .

BKP make lots of parts themselves, the nickle covers are so exact they have to be hallmarked to prevent fraudsters! Tim has even had custom pole screws and I believe bobbins made. Along with sourcing hookup wire from the original Gibson suppliers. WCR for one use Allparts components, they're good parts but generic.

I think what makes a good pickup is commitment.  All you have to do is talk to Tim to see how involved he is in this.  Also if you speak with Ray or Steve, you will see that they both care and want the best sound too.  There is no assembly line production here.  It is like the old Aston Martin where they would have one guy build the engine for you!  You really are getting a hand made product.

Also, Tim uses the absolute best components for the job.  At this point I think the only other thing that BK could source themselves would be to grow the trees that the spacers are cut from!  Though I think that if using a more modern piece makes the pickup better without affecting the sound, then they do it.  This is why they have cloth winding tape, rather than paper (though they can do paper for vintage rewinds).  Tim has experimented and found it doesn't affect the tone and it is more durable.

There never seems to be a cost issue in the parts used either.  He has scoured the world and had things built exactly how they were when the original pickups were made, even down to the braided wire and the pole piece screws. I can see how PRS pickups have made changes over the years which seem to be for cost savings (and I can really hear it too).  The old pickups had N/S base plates, but the new ones are brass, which seems to dull the sound (though I am sure there is more to it than that).

Anyway, sorry that this is so long, but I was just trying to say that the real difference is dedication to making the best.
So many pickups, so little time

I'd just like to add that there are no secrets when it comes to building good sounding pickups just patience and attention to detail...........compromise at any stage and the tone suffers.
The most important factor in build quality starts with the wind and handwinding, scatterwinding in particular, makes all the difference.Next up the pickup will only sound as good as the sum of it's parts so really it's a completey holistic approach. You'd be amazed at some of the techniques we use here like using soft iron for pole screws, slugs and pole shoes...absolute pig to work with as it's so soft but tonally the benefits are amazing so we stick with it.After all I play the pickups too!

Tim really knows his stuff and I like that he doesn't hide secrets or say he has secrets! Another winder here in the States is Wolfe Macload (Wolfetone pickups) and he reminds me of Tim in that he makesa great pickups from the best parts and really takes his time to do it right.
