I like the SM's for the open, dynamic and vocal qualites. Great crunch like the Les Paul-pu's from the 57/58-era. They handle distortion well, but mind you, with the round mellow bass that Alnico II is known for. If you want something more agressive, look at Mules (the AV more modern sounding then the AIV).

I love Stormy Monday's., I have them in 3 guitars:

A Strat with HSS, using AII Stormy Monday and 2 Sultans
1965 335 with AIV unpotted  - it sounds awesome
Les Paul with Riff Raff Bridge & AIV Stormy Monday neck

They all handle distortion excellently.  Low output humbuckers retain clarity when you overload them.  They go into harmonic feedback really well.
