I'm in the works of having a Walnut top/body guitar with a Canary/Rosewood neck built.
The original intention was to be a Mahogany bodied as that is what I am familiar with but the builder suggested a Walnut body.. and well pretty much all of my guitars are Mahogany so I figured why the hell not?
I am looking to use this particular guitar as an inspirational muse rather then my standard go to for my typical writing and playing.
I play more progressive meta/punk and use a VHT live and an AxeFX Ultra in the bedroom. My current guitars with a BKP pickup selection is as follows:
PRS with Nailbomb/VHII
Les Paul Studio with Painkiller/Coldsweat
Peavey Impact 2 with Warpig (greatest low price guitar I've ever owned. And it married the Warpig far better than any other guitar I have)
I'm looking to go low-mid gain prog style with this guitar. Very open with minimal palm muting and lots of over rung notes. So naturally I'd like a very rich harmonic content and chordal clarity.
On the occasion when I go back to my typical playing style, I'd love the pickup to be -capable- of fast/aggressive/high gain/digging-into-the-strings type playing without sounding bad. But it's not a focus, as I have other guitars that do that exceptionally well.
The only problem I have in my own research is that Walnut seems to be a very mid-range heavy guitar wood for bodies. What people seem to suggest most for a Walnut body is the Holydiver and Rebel Yell. The Diver is too much muscle for my intentions, and I plan on kicking the Warpig out of the Peavey to be replaced by a Diver in the future anyways.
So my question is: Would a Rebel Yell sound appropriate for what I am asking? And in the even that I could opt for a lower gained pickup, would the Black Dog's mid hump be too much for a Walnut body?
