question on coupling different BKP models
« on: April 25, 2011, 09:07:07 AM »
Hello,
I would experiment coupling a bridge Nailbomb (Alnico V) and a neck Abraxas (alnico IV)  ...due to different DC resistance (15.7Kohm/ 7.4Kohm) between these models, in your opinion it would be better choose a bridge Abraxas (14Kohm) and place it to the neck?
Thankz

The Abraxas bridge pup will sound nothing like the Nailbomb, so if you want the NB and you don't like the NB neck why not go for a Holydiver or VHII neck which would work well with the NB bridge.

Don't let DCR rating fools you - output level is also related to wire material and gauge, magnet type etc so trying to compare two pups solely on DCR is at best misleading. Also, the very same pup will sound way louder on the neck position because strings have a wider movement here than in bridge position. BKP necks are usually wound cooler so they don't overpower the bridge.

FWIW on my Crawlers set, the bridge is 15.4K and the neck 7.8K (but with different magnets and wire gauge), and they do balance well. Also, my SG currently have a Mule neck and an old JB(j) on bridge and balancing them is mostly a matter of height adjustment.

Now I don't (yet) have any experience with neither the NB or Abraxas so I can't tell how they'd go along, but if that's what you want, you'd better stay with the Abraxas neck and ask Tim to eventually adjust the winding so the pair matches. You'd better ask Tim before you order anyway ;)
