new pups LP Classic
« on: April 15, 2011, 04:06:33 PM »
First of all hello  to everybody, this is my first post and the dilemma that’s driven me here......?

new pups for my 2004 LP classic with stock 500t  and 496r ceramics,  when I was younger high gain was fine but now I've mellowed and looking for more tone.  I do like the tone of P90 but I’m worried about back ground noise so ideally would like a versatile set of humbuckers with a lovely clean big tone with low ish output.

I only use single channel amps  (AC30) and like to keep them as loud and clean as I can then add drive with a TS-9. I play mostly indie, rock with The Who, Thin Lizzy and Gary Moore (RIP) as heavy as I ever go these days.

The other issue is pole spacing the 500t has a spacing of 52mm bridge and 496r 50mm at the neck to accommodate the wider bridge, is this and issue with new pickups?

I was interested in some P rails from Seymour Duncan but on reflection feel they may be too much jack of all trades master of none and who wants a LP to quack like a strat and possibility look a little odd on a LP,

I love my classic and its tapered neck but is just too much of a beast to live with at gigs and I’m afraid my USA strat with Kinman blues pups is first choice these days something I‘m keen to change, thanks in advance for you help  :P

Hi,

I understand the dilemma with the P90s. I also love them especially in the neck position for the low end tightness. I would look for a pickup with a rather low bass EQ then, e.g. Riff Raff, VHII or Emerald, but the latter may have too much power to be close enough to a P90. On the other hand the change in output from the Gibsons to Emeralds would not be as drastic than going to a humbucker of the vintage group.

You can order all humbuckers with standard 50mm or wide 53mm spacing. Unless the E strings run inside the outermost polepieces I would simply choose the wider spacing.

Have you asked Tim for a recommendation?

Cheers Stephan

Stormy Monday's (alnico II) are great for big clean tones and drive well too. If you want tigher bass look at Mules (closest to a 59-PAF), they are versatile and cover everything form pristine cleans to classicrock, heavy rock and even metal if needed.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Yes I do like the sound of those stormy mondays, still loving those p90 clips too !! maybe I could put a p90 in the neck position ala Matt Bellamy style for the best of both worlds  :D

In that case I would pair a Mule with an MQ, both AIV will provide a balanced eq.

P90 hum isn't that bad, especially if you're playing lower gain classic rock - go for some MQs, you won't regret it.

If you must go with humbuckers, Abraxas will do everything you want.
