Pimpin my sg std ! Mules for modern sounds ?
« on: April 14, 2011, 09:00:07 AM »
Hey , bkp fellas;

I bought a good secondhand cherry sg but those jap pafs and the old bill lawrence gibson pickups(previous owner fitted those + an ugly white perloid pickguard..)  lack the bkp clarity and rich sound. I'm back with a good old mesa boogie Mark III as an amp and my esp with miracle man really sings. I need bkps on my other guitars too.

I was always curious on how mules can be versatile and quite tight under gain. Nolly gets them sounding fantastic even for modern metal. Can I hope to get a decent metal sound even in drop C with mules ?

The guitar isnt brittle or harsh sounding, just fat and balanced like a good sg. I also would like to try other stuff rather than the contemporary line which I went through (except for the warpig) .

What about abraxas /rebell yells/ crawlers in an sg ? Or even emerald ? I admit I need to be schooled on those as I never had much interest in other pickups than nailbomb and miracle man but I had too many so I'm curious on the rest of the bkp range.

besides the fact that i would love to try a ceramic warpig in an SG, i have RYs and CSs in my SGs, and they sound absolutely awesome! aggressive, tight, clear and power chords sound ENORMOUS! ;)
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

You should be able to if you use a modern high gain amp. They're very open so getting compressed "modern" tones will need a boot from the preamp. Or boosting.

I'm quite interested inthe Abraxas myself. I got some nice but seriously heavy tones out of a PRS that was loaded with PRS RP pickups into a Mesa. I asked Tim what the closest in his line to the RP was and Abraxas was the answer. It was in a very resonant guitar too so I have some days wondering whether I should swap out the Warpig 7s that I have for the Abraxas. Too many things to try, not enough money!  :D
A-Pig 7s, Miracle Man & Mule, Cold Sweats... Expensive kit and no talent posse.

Maybe the Stockholms. I know they're quite modern voiced, but they just sound killer in Nolly's clips on the website where they're in a SG.
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)

Mediumoutput-pu's do not always perform best in SG's. I certainly would try Mules or if you want a little more highend RiffRaffs.

Yep, they do sound great (I like soapbars). You get more hum, that's in the game too.

I have a Black Dog and it works fine for just about anything I throw at it, though best for classic rock/Guns'n'Roses, but from comparisons I know my SG is somewhat treblier than many other SGs. A Mule sounds like a good deal to me aas well.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog
