« on: March 26, 2007, 07:43:25 PM »
ok, as you ALL know, my search for a new amp isn't going well, as there is only one that i am impressed by and am going to try out this weekend.
SO
i was wondering what the Mesa V-Twin sounds like through a valve poweramp.......... and how would you go about connecting it up? is it simple?

thanks, BM

you connect it like you would a preamp/poweramp setup.  Plug the out into the in.

And it sounds $%&#ING amazing.  The distortion is ungodly, if you put a booster pedal infront of it, you could get so much out of it.  I've only tried it by itself, but like that it sounded like an oversaturated marshall... or a mesa dual rec.  The clean is also rediculously clean, its kinda strange how it gets it so sparkly.

What kind of poweramp would you use though? most poweramps are the same price as a head (which gets you pre and power).  I'd reccommend the peavey 50/50 i believe it is... its a cheap one and its made by peavey so its definately going to last long.
my maxon OD 808 really DOES make poop sound good

agree with the bleeding-sounds great-the boogie rec pre is what you want , of course, for rec tones, but the vt can pull it off with some help-the quad and triaxis are both volatile pre's as well, but $$$
-I love boogie power amps, but you are looking at at least $500 for one on the bay-they will knock you into next week...LOUD!!!

i have a peavey 50/50 and a V-Twin :) Sounds pretty nice. i love it a lot. I could do some clips if anyone would like some, but only with a shitety PC mic, so quality won't be great.
Also - if you're going to go with this set up bloodmountain, you WILL need a hotplate, cuz it sounds shite and dead without one, and for out and out tight pounding metal, you will need a tubescreamer. MESAs are not tight and are quite flubby in the bass end. Tubescreamer tidies it up atreat though.
The V-twin itself seems to me to be tailored more towards single coil sounds. (With a strat it sounds like those little session guitar clips between scenes on Friends and other shitety amerian sitcoms.) I think it's a more bluesy preamp than a metal one, i.e. more LoneStar than Dual Rec. However, that's not to say that you can't get metallica sounds out of it. with the right add-ons...
To be honest i think you'd be faaar better off with the screamer.
LOVING the Mules!

yehy ill be dong that with my DHA VT2 preamp pedal once i get a lil cash. You can pickup a used 50/50 on ebay for around 300 easy. Course youll ened a cabinet. Theyre realy is no cheap way of getting good tone. Its expensive, period. ive tried almost every way of getting around paying more than 600 bucks for an amp and there realy just is no substitute. ive tried a low wattage valve amp (sucks for metal), ive tried multiple valve rpeamp pedals into a ss amp (sound good but its just not the same as all tube), and ive tried a combo of valve pre into a low watt valvie. Nothing comparesd to having the real deal. Just save your money, deal with what youve got and buy BKP's first.

If you want a V-twin pedal I have one for sale, I could bring it to LGS.  Not sure how much they are going for in England, but over here they seem to be about $300 - so £150 say.
So many pickups, so little time

no. i can't deal with what i have at the moment, i don't use it anymore. i use a 15w practice amp (it can hang with a drummer!) to play. my MG just SUCKS when it comes to tone. it's horrible. i've spent ages tweaking, but found nothing. my amp would change my sound more than BKPs.

Philking, i would want that, but i can't go to LGS  :(  i have exams coming up and must revise....

and yeah, i know you need to pay for good tone, and i am willing to spend 600 quid. i'm not quite there yet, but i'm pretty close. i found 30 quid in a CD case the other day!  :)

anyway, thanks for enlightening me, the_bleeding.

this all seems pretty cheap, poweramp: about 150, v-twin: 150, cab 200. that's 500, perhaps more (550)......

about the screamer: apparently it has bright tone......   i will need to try it this weekend to see.

Maybe you should buy an extension cab for the marshall? I hated mine before i bought the 4x12 too. But now it has balls up the ass. Its not an all tube monster but it can scream like the best of them i think. Bottom line i think is that its best just to wait until you have enough money for what you want and then start thinking about all of your options. I dont know what your situation is financialy but id say if youve got the cash to burn, then buy an all tube head like youve wanted and pickup a used cabinet off of ebay. Buying a V-Twin and then running it into a poweramp just doesnt seem like a very good alternative to just straight up buying a valve amp.

about the marshall: that may be because you have the MG100 something, which has 2 distortion modes. mine only has one, which sounds cr@p. and i have a feeling that speakers will just be trying to mask the bad tone, but won't get rid of it. i am not happy with the sound.

thanks for the advice, but i can't choose which valve amp. you can see the 12 pages. either people have directed me away, or it is not in stock anywhere near me so i can't try it out. i think my only hope lies in that used ENGL screamer at my local shop.

then what was the point in this thread? to investigate into this topic, how much it costs and how to set it up.
