Amp - Speaker Options
« on: April 27, 2011, 09:29:15 AM »
Hey guys so got my AFD100 which I am very happy with! Really musical when playing but still with fairly high gain.

I am a bit unsure however as to the inputs/ outputs between speaker and amp.

I have been using a mock marshall 4x12 cab that I bought from a mate a while back with Vintage 30's in it.

Using my Carvin Legacy I went from output 1 on the back of the amp at 8 ohms (theres a switch that selects 4, 8 or 16 ohm output on the back of the carvin) to the left 8 ohm input on the back of the 4x12 and been gigging fine with it.

On the AFD100 I have connected the 1x8 ohm output to the 8 ohm input on the back of the cab and it seems fine...is this correct?

I have read numerous websites but evey site just talks about ohms and provides details on how to understand etc with formulas which I have no interest in lol.

Simply put If I want to connect 1 amp to 1 cab what is the best way to do it? I note that there is a 1x16 ohm output on the back of the amp or 2x16 outputs (I am guessing thats 2x8 ohms which makes up 16 ohms)

Is there any difference in sound using different methods? I take it the 1x4 ohm or 2x8 ohms (being two 4 ohm outputs ) are for 2x12 cabs.

Just dont want to hurt my amp. On that note probably going to buy a real Marshall 1960bv soon as well.

Many thanks for any help in advance.

Kind regards

Mark

You need to know what ohms your cab is running at, and match the amp to that.  It sounds like your cab is an 8ohm 4x12, but do you know that for sure?  I'd get that sorted first.  Never guess!

(Note: the 2x16ohm outs on the amp are used when you're plugging into two 16ohm cabs, therefore running at at actual load of 8ohms as the cabs are run in parallel)

If it's a "normal" recent Marshall cab, it will have the connection panel that allows you some configs.

It allows for the following configurations:
1x16 Ohm, Mono
1x4 Ohm, Mono
2x8 Ohm, Stereo

You should set the switch to Mono and use 16 Ohm on the amp and the Cab, 16 Ohm always sounds best to me. Try the 4 Ohm Tap to compare, by matching the amp 4 Ohm out to the right input in Mono, maybe you like that better. Alternatively, if you connect the 8 Ohm speaker out to the cab set to stereo, you should be only using two of the 4 speakers in 8 Ohm, which could be a viable way to get volume down a bit.

In doubt, I would always measure resistance with a multimeter. A cab that is 8 Ohm will read about 5 Ohm on a MM, a Cab with 16 Ohm will read about 13 Ohm. Don't ask me why, has to do with reactive resistance or something, but like this you can always ensure everything is wired correctly.
