floyd rose help
« on: May 10, 2011, 09:18:32 PM »
Ok, I finally want to get my floyd-rose Superstrat sorted so I can gig this thing.  At present, the 'issues' are...

(1) bridge visibly dips when I bend a string (want to stop this)
(2) the strings 'flutter' when I play (I'm using 11s in Eb and play hard/aggressively)

I'm at the stage now where if I don't get this sorted soon I'm gonna break the guitar back down and sell the parts on ebay (and buy something new).

Any suggestions welcome.

I'm no expert on trems, but something like a Tremol-No on Goldo BackBox?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

if its floating I don't think you can fix the issue of the bridge dipping when you bend. I use double stop bends on my les paul a lot and going to a floyd was annoying. There isn't an accurate way to compensate as far as I know.
I guess you'd have to block the trem and tighten up the springs so that it's harder to pull forward, but that would take away some of the uses.

I'm not sure if using different numbers of springs, and the changing the pattern they are installed makes a difference.
I used 3 in an arrowhead pattern.

I've decided to avoid double stop bends while using a floyd since i discovered I prefer the bridge to float

Thanks for the responses, yep the bridge is floating.

I have a treml-no, but that stops the trem movement when you want to pull back.  I don't think any of the traditional trem-stoppers will work as I want UP and DOWN movement on the trem.

Is there anything else to try?

you could try a hipshot tremsetter - it doesnt stop up or down movement but is deisgned to return "your full floating tremolo to an exact "zero" neutral position, eliminating flutter and sag, so your guitar remains in tune."

like a lot of these things, the success of them depends on set-up

I've never tried any of the newer devices like the Tremol-No, but I had a Tremsetter on a Strat Plus years ago.   As Wez says, setup is important but it is possible to get it just right without too much hassle.

It definitely solved the "flutter" issue, and it reduced the "dip" when bending strings, I think it even improved sustain a bit, but it did change the feel quite a lot.  If you do the Hank Marvin thing of shaking the bar so it rapidly raises then lowers the pitch, you really feel the "zero" point every time you go through it.  It's slightly annoying.

nice one, tremsetter bought on ebay for £23.00 inc delivery.

lets hope this is the final piece of the puzzle - I do miss my tastleless whammy-bar abuse (though I doubt anyone else does)

also increasing the number of strings will help with the trem dipping somewhat but not entirely it will however make it a bit tauter for dives etc

Yup, chucking on more springs and then tightening up the claw will help, but floyds are a pita in general, which is why my new axe is a hard-tail. You use 11's, which is always going to be harder on the trem during bends etc, so the only partial solution is to add more heavy duty springs to the claw and crank it a bit back into the body. You'll have to work harder to use the arm, but apart from using the tremel-no to stop it completely there aren't many other solutions.

Let us know if the doohickey you ordered works, though! Very interested to find out more solutions for floating trems!  :)

This thread actually bothers me. What it sounds like you want goes against how a floyd is designed to function.

You should sell it and get a different guitar.

Explain  :?

I've owned other floyd rose-equipped guitars and only last week sold a Mockingbird set up with 11s in Eb (and a floyd) - that guitar worked fine without anywhere near as much flutter.

The tremsetter I've got on the way is designed to address these shortcomings of a floyd rose.

You should sell it and get a different guitar.

err, no (unless you want to buy me a new guitar ????).

I've got too much time and money invested in the guitar to make my money back.

Err maybe I'm misunderstanding. I thought you said you didnt want your floyd to move up/down when you bend a string or other action like using the whammy bar. Which makes no sense, because theyre built to work that way. Anything else was probably from a bad setup.

Yeah about selling it. You said you were almost there. :D I also said that because people who dislike floyds seem to feel very strong aganst them and rather than live with an instrument you have to fight, i would look for another option.
