VHII or Black Dog for this Warmoth Project?
« on: July 12, 2011, 01:21:22 AM »
Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me decide between these two pickups for the bridge position of a Warmoth Telecaster I'm building.  The body is black korina, which is similar to mahogany but a tad bit brighter.  The neck is canary, which is similar to maple but a tad bit warmer.  It will have a non-recessed Floyd Rose bridge that is set up to drop the pitch only.

I'm leaning towards the Black Dog because I like having a little extra midrange, but I plan on using this guitar for both standard and alternate tunings.  I want to be able to tune down as far as one full step to D, although no further than that.  I need a pickup that isn't going to be too bright in standard tuning, but also not too dark when tuned down a full step.  I prefer vinatge-style pickups that are wound a little hotter than a traditional PAF, so I'm not interested in one of the higher output pickups.  I'm pretty much set on one of these two pickups, I'm wondering if someone who has used the Black Dog can tell me if it retains clarity with reasonable drop tunings?  Or would the VHII be a better overall choice?  I plan to use this guitar primarily for 70's classic rock, 80's hair metal, and blues.  Thanks for the help.

I don't own those pickups, but I believe that the BD is the go-to pickup for downtuning.  Sounds like it would suit your choice of tonewoods too.

That's what I'd go for.
