Suggestions for a Gibson les Paul Studio
« on: July 15, 2011, 10:54:52 PM »
Hello, I am looking into buying a new bridge pick up for my gibson les paul studio. The one in it now seems to be too muddy for what I am doing. I currently am playing in a band and looking for a Cursed Entombed Converge type tone. Orginally I was thinking the war pig but now I am thinking more of a Alcino Nailbomber. I am looking for a "dark" tone but it still needs to have some bite and high end. Any suggestions are appreciated.

My current set up with the Gibson Studio
Ampeg v4 through sunn 415 ran through a turbo rat
Sovtek mig 100 through Mesa oversized 412

Hm I have a nailbomb, but would probably rather recommend you a Miracle Man. It has a big low end and plenty of low mids, I think it would work well for the kind of sound you're looking for.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I wouldn't describe the ABomb as "dark" in any way.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

If you want it dark, roll the tone back.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I'd say go with a pair of emg 85x, if that's the music you're gonna play you'll have a lot easier time getting converge tones out of the 85x's than any bkp. Kurt Ballou uses emg 81s and 85s but having tried both i think the best emg's are the 85x and 89x, which is a 85x with coil tap.  I have a pair of 89x's on my esp viper and they sound killer.
Stormy Mondays, Mules, Riff Raffs, '63 Veneer Board Set, BG52s, Emeralds, C-Pig(b), Trilogy(n)

My SG is rather on the dark side unplugged (did A/B compared with two other SG standards recently), and the ABomb bridge still doesn't sound dark on it.
