Just got back from a holiday in Oxfordshire and while I was away I went to Birmingham and had a look around a couple of guitar shops as I've been toying with the idea of getting a mahogany guitar that will work as a good backup guitar and also give a slightly different tonal option. My current guitars are a Jackson SL3 Soloist with a Holydiver bridge and Trilogy Suites for the neck and middle and a Yamaha Pacifica 112 with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and Hotrails for the neck and middle. I was toying with spending something in the £3-400 bracket and as such I was considering an Ibanez ART, Cort Zenox and Cort M series. I didn't see the need for a trem on this one. However, I called in at Fair Deal Music in Birmingham and saw a beautiful second hand PRS SE Custom 24 on the wall so decided to give it a try. It was in mint condition, the neck was a lot easier to play than I anticipated and the trem was an absolute joy to use, being really smooth in its action. Suffice to say, I fell in love with it and struck a deal at £350, which seemed pretty good to me. I've just got back this afternoon and it's already hanging proudly on the wall with a set of Schaller straplocks to be fitted this evening with a new set of strings and a slight lowering of the action. Needless to say I'm very happy and will make sure that there are some songs in the set that require this guitar as it's far too nice to just be a backup. I have no immediate plans to change the pickups as the stock items seem pretty good to me but you never know. Stock, the guitar seems every bit as versatile as people often say.

Congrats! That axe is seductive. Personally I would favour a 22-fret version, but I've you are used to the scale you can perform some screaming solo's in the upperregister. I'll be tempted to throw in a pair of Emeralds or RiffRaffs.

Funnily enough, a set of zebra Emeralds did cross my mind. I love playing it so much, right now I could be tempted to just sell my Jackson and use the money on something else.

Fair Deal Music is my favorite music store here. I bought an acoustic there once. They make you feel like a customer and not like an idiot asking ridiculous things as the people at PMT usually do.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I think that's not a bad idea. Played some of this SE's in shops and I must say I like the neck and the workmanship is happening at this pricelevel. Great value for money! I'm still thinking about a p90 hollow SE, but... I already have a bunch of guitars... Always gas, gas, gas....  :)

I always thought the Custom 24 was a decent buy at £600 new so a mint one at £350 was just too good to miss. What has surprised me most, as I'd never really thought about it before, is that the cutaways are so far up the neck that access isn't very different to my Jackson which is a neck-thru. The only thing it can't do that the Jackson can is divebombs, which is a facility I like to use on rare occasions, hence the idea of just selling the Jackson crossed my mind to free up some cash. I doubt I will though as I only bought it last year and it cost me the thick end of £1000.

The PRS SE models are really good guitars for the money.  Maybe not the best electronics or hardware (although the Korean version of the PRS trem feels pretty good, I think, and I don't even like trems!), but the basic wordworking is fine and they play great.

I have an SE EG which has been sitting around for ages, in bits, with no pickups.  I really should sort it out!

Nice acquisition!  :D

My original EG 4 has a Crawler & 2 BK P-91's and is really versatile.  Tim had the scratchplate made from my original.  I had it on the BK stand at LGS in 2005.

Slartibartfarst42, your SE looks great.  If you do change pickups, look at Abraxas too,  I have them in a single cut and they work great.  I've been thinking about one of the new Santana SE's, but haven't been able to try one yet.  Good luck with yours.

Is that one of the first series of EGs?  I had one of the second series (EG-3?) with the Lindy Fralin "domino" pickups for a while, probably shouldn't have sold it but I wasn't sure the bolt-on neck was "right" for a PRS....

Thanks. If I were to change the pickups, I'm not sure I'd want anything that was too drastically different to the stock items. I'm finding so far that the bridge pickup has enough bite for Rock music but is also lovely and warm so it ends up really versatile and gives up some pretty convincing Blues tones. The neck pickup is warm and creamy, with plenty articulation at the bottom and a singing high end. I have no idea which BKP would best fit the bill. It certainly wouldn't be any of the BKP I've had already. The Holydiver I think would work well in the bridge but possibly a bit too Rock orientated rather than truly versatile; The Nailbomb would be completely wrong and the Cold Sweat would be too tight and certainly too bright. The only BKP neck pickup I've owned is a Cold Sweat and that would be wrong too so if I do change pups eventually, it will have to be an entirely new set for me.

Yes - the original pickups were HFS/SD/SD.  The neck is solid on mine and since I have so many Strats, it never bothered me.  With the BK's it is a tone monster.
