Pickup problem - Need help
« on: August 16, 2011, 03:31:18 AM »
So as stated from my previous thread, I was getting an Ibanez RGA 121 Prestige. It's amazing.

It has BK nailbombs installed which I love, one problem though. The neck pickup isn't working properly. I tried playing it through my friends line 6 pod although there was no signal. Through my amp I can get some sort of output but certainly nothing as loud compared to the bridge pickup.

I rang the guy who I bought it off. He wasn't aware of any problems although he could be telling a white lie.

Loose solder joint perhaps? I'm not experienced in this field so I'll probably check in with my local music store for them to check as well. What do you guys think is wrong?

Here's a pic of my sexy pickups..

Because they are the same pickups will the two positions sound different fro each other? I've read that they are a calibrated set and are made to work together but perhaps one of you can expand on this? Maybe an aftermath in the bridge would be a good idea? I'm always on the prowl for more goodies haha

Thanks

There could be many reasons: Bad solder could easily be one of them. Another possible fault is that the pickup has become de-magnetised from a soldering iron which has been too hot. I'd say take it to a tech n let them figure it out. If it is the coils, get it rewired by Tim which will be cheaper than a new pickup.

Thanks for the input. Where would I go about getting Tim to rewire it for me? It isn't a big loss of the pickup cr@ps out. It gives me an excuse to buy a different one to explore different sounds possibly..

Its unlikely to be a bad pickup imo - any competent tech should be able to sort this out for you.  Desolder the pickup and measure the DC resistance, should read around 9.5k. You then want to know that the pot is working fine - if it's a shared volume pot and the bridge pickup is ok, then you can safely assume its ok.  If they are separate volumes for bridge and neck, get out the DMM and measure the resistance (around 500k).

If you are based anywhere close to Newcastle, I'll take a look for you.

Looks like something's defective - possibly the pickup, more probably the wiring or switch...

The same pickup will indeed sound different in different positions - and more powerfull on the neck pos. FWIW.

But anyway : your neck and bridge are NOT the same pickup, they are 2 different pickups designed to work well together wrt/ both tone and output (which is what this "calibrated set" thing is all about).

Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)
