Ceramic Holy Diver
« on: September 03, 2011, 03:46:08 PM »
I asked Tim if I could could get a custom build Holy Diver with an ceramic magnet and he said that this would be the pretty much the same as the Cold Sweat.  I have read all of the past posts regarding this subject and some of the users swear that the C-HD is slightly different than the CS, but these are Tim's PUPs so he should know.   Here is what Tim said regarding the C-HD.

"The old style HD with ceramic magnet essentially turned into the Cold Sweat and you can get that no problem. Just putting a ceramic magnet under an HD will make it half way to a Painkiller so I'm inclined to say the PK would do it better."

Kindest Regards,

Tim

I tend to take Tim's word for it when he replies. He should know a thing or two about these pickups I dare say

Don't forget his pickups are the result of meticulous research. Personally I would only ask for a custom-pickup if it really makes sense.

what he meant is that the original ceramic holy diver became the cold sweat, but it's not the same as the new holy diver
an alnico cold sweat would be me more like the rebel yell
the new diver has a different winding, that is supposedly close to the painkiller
a ceramic new diver would be only "half way" to a painkiller cause the killer has 3 magnets, so 1 magnet only wouldn't make it as high output and tight sounding as the PK

That was also my Impression when I swapped my Painkiller to a Holydiver... they are not that far away from each other. I personally like the Diver better and with a boost (which I always use for dirty sounds) I can get as brutal as I could with the PK.

tonewise, the aftermath has a lot in common with the diver as well
did a straight swap in my main les paul
the diver had just a hair more bass, less volume and softer picking response, but almost the same frequency curve
similar midrange grain, but without the raspy ceramic texture
