Surge protector/power conditioner?
« on: January 23, 2006, 11:28:31 AM »
Hi all,

After having a power dive in my house last week (see thread with volume drop), i am considering a proper surge protector/power conditioner.

I ve checked a few solutions from Belkin, and i was wondering if anyone is using anything similar etc. Any recommendations?

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=201705&pcount=&Product_Id=159567&Section.Section_Path=%2F%2FRoot%2FPureAVHomeCinema%2FPower%2F

Isolator? whats the difference with the above?

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=201705&pcount=&Product_Id=159505&Section.Section_Path=%2F%2FRoot%2FPureAVHomeCinema%2FPower%2F

And then it has another surge protector which again i dont understand how it differs with the two above ... all are rated for AV use.

The 1st one is 30quid (argos)
The 2nd one is 40quid (amazon)
the 3rd one is 27quid (WHsmith)

I´m facing the same problems.. but i have luck, that no energy drop down here while i was playing m y 5150.
so, i basically need SOMETHING that will protect my head from get burned with these energy fall outs and highs ups.
will we need a power conditioner like a furmann? Only that? No Voltage estabilizer?
Also, here in brazil, my 5150 head is 110 volts, and in the region of brasil i live, it´s 220 volts. so i neeed a power converter too.

I think you had a brownout, where the power drops. You need a UPS, Uninterruptible Power Suppliy,  like :

The UPS has a battery that keeps the voltage up even if it drops low or there is a power cut. Spike protectors just stop power surges, so wouldn't solve a brownout.

Spike and surge filtering is good, but I'd go for a lower end computer surge protector, the Belkin AV stuff is expensive for what it is. There's better AV protection out there! But the PC stuff will do the job just fine.

If it happens again get in touch with your electricity supplier, they have to maintain the supply to your house within certain limits, and you can ask for it to be monitored if you have lots of problems. They fit a box to log the voltage surges and drops over a few days.

Well, i ll move out in a few months so i cant be bothered with the electricity company.

I also wanted to cut off RF/EMI noise from the dirty AC, hence i was looking at the 2nd and 3rd link, what do you reckon?

i'd look at a company who specialise in hifi equipment if you want to avoid mains noise. some can be very expensive, but I know there are cheaper items. Monster make some power strips with built-in conditioners.

Belkin aren't bad but from what I could gather from a previous company there is a massive mark-up here in the UK. I've got three of their surge protectors - two for my pc and one for my hifi.

www.russandrews.com try them - the silncer works well, as do the RFI removing Yello power cables.
