Hey guys! Question about covers
« on: September 24, 2011, 11:44:37 PM »
Hey you handsome bunch!

First off, this is my first post here, i'd like to say hi, i'm XJ, hailing from Americaland, and ready to jam.

I have a question for any experienced member or staff member to answer:

I'm currently making a deal where i will receive an Ibanez RGA121 with a set of Painkillers installed. This is awesome, because i was planning on slapping some PKs in the 121 if they weren't in there already.

BUT, and this is just me nit-picking:

It has the camo cover, which is pretty awesome looking, but i like the look of the bare pickup itself, no cover, no potted wax mess, etc.

I know BKP removes covers for free, but i'm in America, Texas to be more exact, so here are my two questions:

1: Where could i send the pickups to be de-covered?
2: would i have ANY sort of warranty on them, as the guitar would be second hand?

thanks!

-Josh

Wouldn't this modify the sound of the pickup in a small way?
I know Tim compensates the wind on covered pickups to make them sound like their uncovered counterparts.

All BKPs are waxpotted by default (unless you specifically ask for unpotted ones, that is), cover or not, and this is not a "mess" - it really helps avoiding squealing at rehearsal / stage level.

But I can understand you prefer the look of open pickups ;)

"The warranty is only valid to the original purchaser and is non transferable." (http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/tandc.php)

Any good pickup tech should be able to cleanly remove the covers. Won't sound exactly like "stock" uncovered BKPs since Tim does wind pickups a bit differently to compensate for the cover, but this might not be such an issue.

Another solution would be to sale the pickups and buy uncovered ones instead.

Oh, and welcome here BTW 8)
