Just put Tungsol EL34Bs in my pittbull CL, replacing some very slightly tired TAD STR 34Bs (which are now in my JVM, sounding much better than the JJs that were there, stupid harsh, bitty, grainy JJs)

interesting. i have some valves on the way too and there are a few tung-sols in the shipment. no el34s, though.

Never tried the Tung Sol EL34s, but glad to hear they're a good sounding valve.

I've used =C= and Groove Tube 'Mullard' repros recently, both were very nice with the =C= having more attack and the GT being smoother, slightly.  Both very nice.

Thanks for sharing. I have now JJ's 6V6's in my amp, don't know how the Tungsol 6V6's are, but will check them out.

I cant say anything about the other types, but the 34Bs are fantastic. They're sharper than you expect from an EL34, brighter and livelier in the top end, thick and punchy in the mids, tight low end. Best thing though is you can get much more attack from them than you really should from a 34 and it has no roughness or fizz to it at all (at least in the pitbull).

I'll certainly be trying tungsols in my other amps when the time comes. Especially since I very much like their 12AX7s as well.

I have only tried a Tung-Sol 12AX7, which is currently in my Mesa Roadster, and it's a great sounding tube!
I have heard nothing but good things about the 34B's.
I also heard they have some 6L6 flavor to them.

Yeah, I heard that in descriptions, and hearing the valves, I can see what people are on about. The 34Bs (the tungsol ones at least; I dont find it true of the STR 34Bs) have a sharper, crisper top end that I dont normally acsociate with EL34s. I've had 6L6s in the Pittbull. I had high hopes, I normally like 6L6s better, but while the treble sharpened up, the mids lost fullness and punch and the low end was comparatively sloppy (compared to the STRs). That may be that though my PB model has the option to use 6L6s, it was designed for EL34s, though. Compared to that, however, these are kinda like 6L6 top end on EL34 mids, and low end, but the low end is deeper punchier (and tighter than the 6L6s, but thats in an amp that was designed for EL34s).

I have the same tubes in my Cornford Roadhouse and they sound terrific. I went for these after having a long chat with a guy at Hot Rox - a really nice, helpful guy. A big contrast to the rude, patronising attitude of the bloke at Watford Valves.
