Metal pups for 7 string maple neck-through
« on: October 04, 2011, 03:53:06 AM »
7 string, 27" scale, maple neck-through body, mahogany wings, maple top, ebony fretboard, super strat.

I like death and doom metal. I like to get a roaring, possibly darker sort of distorted tone (my 8-string has a C-Pig, but I think I'm looking for something slightly different here). I like a thick, meaty crunch. I may want some versatility, between thick power chords, tight rhythms and decent cleans.

I'm a bedroom amateur recording artist for the moment, using an amp modeller, so I guess there's no specific amp it should be aimed at.

Because this is a maple-neck through baritone, I was thinking the Miracle Man's highs might be too harsh?

Holydiver is another one that's been recommended to me, but the whole "80's" thing throws me off, I'm not sure how to interpret that description. Is there something about the Holydiver that may not be tight or aggressive enough or something for quick palm muted technical stuff? Not a broad enough sounding EQ? Something else? I guess I don't listen to enough 80s music.  :?

Also thinking about the Aftermath, but it may not have dense enough sounding low-mids for doom metal I'm guessing, at least to outshine the other options. :?:

Opinions?

I'm not sure the NB is what I'm after. I've seen people describe it as 90's metal sounding, and while I've always liked Sepultura, I think I might want a less grainy sound. The recordings make it sound a bit like a Warpig, and I'm looking for less of a "bwang" and more of a "whong" I guess.

Obligatory youtube clip:

Not their exact distorted tone necessarily, but this is the kind of stuff I jam out to. I need distorted and clean sounds that work well with this.

Also, as long as I'm replacing electronics - fancy wiring tricks? Never really experimented with them before. Splitting the bridge/full neck mode or something? Suggestions?

The Miracle Man would provide a nice counterpart to the ceramic Warpig you have at the moment. It's more polished sounding, and no, the top end will not be harsh at all.
