Rebel Yell Bridge/VHII Neck? (Nolly)
« on: October 10, 2011, 12:26:19 PM »
I've been recommended a Rebel Yell bridge with VHII neck, for my Basswood Ibanez, and I wondered what people thought about that combo? I was told someone called Nolly on this forum has that config. So if you read this, Nolly; what do you think of it?

I'd also like to know how the Rebel Yell compares to the Nailbomb, as Tim said I could go for this in the bridge, if I wanted a little bit more output.

Thanks  8)

I know that Nolly uses that combo on the new album of his band (canīt remember the name though). Those two will go together very well in voicing and just be a nice combo.
I have RY bridge and it is rather bright with an agressive midrange and tight bass. It rocks a lot. Should just be a great fit with the also bright VHII which I hear is a stunning neck PU.

It makes a lot of sense on paper, Nolly uses it a lot and Tim recommends it (which alone should be enough to decide), so I canīt see how you could go wrong here.

And as long as you are not doing very heavy metal I think the NB is unnececary.

The thing I was worried about was it being too bright in the highs for a Basswood body. But I've also heard that BKP have a tendency to be able to have a lot of highs, but not have that awful ear piercing qualities you'd expect, am I right? And I've just downloaded Nolly's band, and it seems his Rebel Yell can handle some pretty heavy music, lol

Your understanding on the brightness of the BKPs is correct. I have two of the known bright models (Cold Sweat and Rebel Yell). Both are bright and have a lot of cut but are not harsh or fizzy. Both can handle heavy rock stuff - probably the metal stuff, too.

Basswood is not usually known for excessive brightness. Hence the Rebel Yell should work. If it does not you can agree with BKP for an exchange.

Cheers Stephan

The RY can sure do Metal, no doubt about it. But due the brightness alot of people would prefer somthing like a NB because it has more chug, whilst the RY has more of the punch if you get what I mean.  But the RY is tight enough for sure. I like to do some Trivium with mine which I have in a Ibanez S (mahagony but still small and bright).

When we say bright in a BKPs sense we mostly donīt mean piercing highs or something, but rather the a clarity and reduced bass. Not that the bass is abcent, itīs just that the most focused frequencys on the RY are the high mids, so the general characteristic can be described as bright.
These characteristics make it a great PU with a lot of cut in the mids which can be very agressive, with a nice and tight bottom which will punch but not boom, which makes it nicely fast.

I would put it in a basswood guitar (also Tim recommended it there and he knows his shitee). Also listen if your axe really is that bright, because what you can read about woods is just a good rule of thumb as far as I am concerned.
