P/U set for Ibanez Sv 420!
« on: November 04, 2011, 05:02:46 PM »
My guitar needs pickups! It's a thin mahogany body with a maple neck; I've only played it unplugged (as it lacks pickups), but it seems to be a tad brighter than my Schecter Classic. I'll post some random "pulse points" so you get a feel of what I like:

1. My '03 Music man JP (basswood body/maple neck) through my Mesa sounds AWESOME. It has the stock Steve's Special, which is ceramic, something like 16 Ohms?
2. I had a Seymour Duncan Jazz neck model in the bridge of my Schecter for recording, and I think lower output Alnico pickups just sound better. I put in an AM to try it out, and while it does kick ass through my amp, it sounds a bit too "sterile" through Pod Farm.
3. Dimarzio Humbucker from Hell is probably my facorite neck pickup.
4. Lowest I tune to is drop C.
5. I LOVE high-end definition and sparkle, but I don't want ice-pick highs.

've been considering CS/PK/RY/everything, but I'm just at a loss with so many awesome pickups. If I lived close to England, I'd just keep swapping them out until I found something perfect! Anywho, a poll seemed like a fun idea :p

I voted VHII which should provide the sparkle you seek without being ice picky. Mules should work well, too.

Cheers Stephan

The VHII simply rocks, but cleans up with a sort of single coil vocal qualities. Mules are a safe bet too, amazing classic PAF-tones.

Hmm, so VHII's seem to be a good idea, eh! Mules are intriguing me like no idea, though... My only worry is that they might be too dark in this guitar, but then agian, they go in LP's with usually great results, no?

Mules won't be too dark in mahogany. I have them in a mahogany body/bolt on mahogany neck guitar and they're great in this plank. Mules and VHII are relatively low output, but therefore rich in tone and depth, they clean up very nice too.

I find more and more that I'm recommending these pickups, but I replaced my Steve's Special and Air Norton (Petrucci's Combo) with The C-Bomb/Cold Sweat combo. Although if you like the qualities of the SD Jazz, a Nailbomb Neck may suit you more. I'm really considering replacing my Crunch-Lab/Liquifire with that combo, but I keep getting the feeling I'll miss my them, haha. And I know what you mean about the Aftermath, I had the same problem. But I'm now happy with my Nailbomb/Cold Sweat combo :) It's the perfect combo for them Petrucci tones, if that's what you're after. But they are indeed versatile enough to play many other things. I for one play everything from Vai to Petrucci to Trivium to Bullet  to Jazz to Fusion, etc.

Hmm, everyone suggests that! Although, that's not a bad thing :)
