Tonewood for EMG/Blackout equipped Les Paul?
« on: November 08, 2011, 12:05:34 PM »
Hi all. This may be my first post on this profile, but I'm familiar with the forum as I've been also using my brother's account. Just thought it's time for me to get my own. I just thought I'd bring this up for the people who was confused as to why a guys first post on a BKP forum is about Active Pickups, lol.

Well me and my brother are having custom guitars made. We're in a band together so we're kind of both going to be using them. Now one of the guitars is a Les Paul style. We're really keen on Feline's thin version of the Les Paul (Lion I think it's called), but we're confused on Tonewoods:

I see a lot of Active players who play Metalcore & Post-Hardcore style music of this day and age (Bullet For My Valentine to name one) plays with Maple Thru-Neck, Alder Body guitars. But I just can't see a les Paul being made from one of them. I mean it could work seing as it's going to be thinner than a traditional Les Paul, but I wanted to see if someone could give me a bit of advice on wood suggestion? I don't really want a full Mahogany Les Paul, I kind of want it to be somewhere in the middle. Oh and an Ebony Fingerboard is a must :)

I've been thinking of choices like:

1) Mahogany Body/ Maple Neck
2) Alder Body/ Mahogany Neck-Thru ( I thought this may keep the tone of a Les Paul, but kind of give it more bite)

Anyone got some good advice?

Solid mahogany has plenty of bite
A maple cap tames the treble and focuses it too

The thinner bodied Lion special that I made myself is awesome - great weight - plenty of top , but then it does have an ebony board.

I'm a bit out of the loop with some of the modern subdivisions of metal (back in my youth you were either rock, hard rock, metal or thrash) but I like a lot of the playing (even if I don't like some of the vocal styles).

But in terms of guitars it's pretty modern/classic stuff with some 80s variants being used too .

Often you may find that bands use certain guitars because that is all they could afford, or who gave them a deal  on stuff etc
In the studio they may also supplement their own guitars with borrowed guitars as well
