Laney LC30 Speaker/Valve upgrade?

i've read both sides of the argument for the 30w speaker in a 30w amp thing, some people say it will be fine, others say you should go for safety and get a much higher rated one. i've no experience with this so can't comment.

hellatone speakers, to the best of my knowledge, are just celestions that avatar wear in for a while and charge you extra for. if you break some celestions in yourself they should sound like that after a while of playing anyway.

i might be wrong on this, so don't quote me on it! but to me it has "gimmick" written all over it.

fwiw, i'm seriously considering a g12h30 for my lc30.

you have it right with those Hellatone speakers, I wouldn't pay extra when you can crank the shite out of the speaker yourself.  My G12H-30s took a few rehearsal sessions to break in - you can really hear the difference too as they're VERY midrangey at first.

I haven't used the heritage G12H-30 yet so I'm not sure how they compare with the standard model.  From what I hear though, they are subjectively 'smoother'

So 30W is ok?

BTW is the V30 a harsh speaker or something?

Finally i was told by both UK valve shops, to go with JJs in my pre/power amp. Are they good?

Any experiences with JJ ECC83S and ECC803S?

I was thinking ECC803S in V1, and ECC83S in V2,3,4. and JJ EL84 in the power section.

A Vintage 30 is a 60W speaker! - The name is misleading! Try this guy for speakers
http://www.ross-co.co.uk/xcart/home.php

I replaced my stock speaker in a Peavey Classic 30 with an Eminence The Wizard - but the guy that runs the place is very helpful. Tell him what sound you are trying to get and he will advise you which speaker would be best suited. He does prefer Eminence to Celestions at the moment!

Related story - guy in the band changed his Jensen speaker to a Vintage 30 - slight improvement - changed his stock pickups to Mules - HUGE difference! I'd spend the money on pickups not on valves!

Not wishing to preach to the converted audience... I'd go for the pickups first and then play with the rest.

On speakers - Allan (the guy at Ross) is really helpful though. There is also a Vintage 30 on eBay at present (7385575565).

There are some helpful speaker reviews on Harmony Central too.

Good luck!
