Change BBPro on my Les Paul
« on: November 23, 2011, 09:28:43 AM »
Hi,
I have a Gibson Les Paul Standard Faded with 2 Burstbuckers Pro pickups. I'm very pleased with the tone of these pickups but I want to have the ability of coil splitting and the BBPro don't do that.
So I'm looking for BK pickups wich have similar tone as the BBPro but with four conductor wiring.

I still found 4 pickups that may be suitable :
- Abraxas
- Black Dogs
- The Mule
- Rebel Yell

I listen to all the sample and it seems to me that the good pickups will maybe be the "Black Dogs" or "The Mule". The BBPro are Alnico V pickups like the "Black Dogs".

Can you help me to make the good choice ?
Wich of these pickups sounds better with coil splitting ?

the black dog is middier and smoother than the bb pro
the mule is not as hot
maybe the riff raff would fit the bill
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Have you thought about fitting a four conductor wire to the BBPros? If you like them and the missing coil split option is the only complaint then this would achieve what you want. Any pro shop should be able to perform the job correctly.

Any BKP you will choose will sound different - whether better or not that can only you decide. The Riff Raff, VHII, Black Dog and Emerald all have A5 magnets, so does the Rebel Yell. Mule and Abraxas have A4 magnets. Compared to the BBPro the Riff Raff may be brighter whereas the Black Dog may be middier.

But there should be at least one forum member here having replaced BBs or BBPros with BKPs.

Cheers Stephan

Really ? I didn't know it was possible. I will make investigations about that.
Thanks !
