New Member seeking pickup advice!
« on: December 09, 2011, 12:57:40 PM »
I wondered if you could give me some more advice on what pickups would suit
my guitar?

It's for an HSS setup. I'm looking for a pickup for in the bridge that
is really expressive for soloing, but also retains good string separation.
Something which really lets you put emotion into your playing. For the
Middle/Neck, I'm again looking for something which really sounds nice for
playing cleans. A kind of Hot Clean, as to a Fender style Perfect Clean.
Kind of to give the less distorted solos a bit of presence so it sounds more
of a Lead tone's clean.But also able to handle gain should I throw a fair bit at it to really make it sing.

The specs for this guitar are as follows ->

Chambered Black Korina Body;
Koa Top;
Pau Ferro Neck;
Ebony Fingerboard;
Wilkinson Tremelo.

I play a lot of Neil Zaza on this guitar.

I also messaged BKP directly and they recommended a Holy Diver with Trilogy Suites. What do you make of this combo? I'm guessing Tim really knows his pickups well, I was just led to believe the Holy Diver was suited to Alder guitars, as to Korina/Koa which is Mahogany like?

Before I saw the specs of your guitar I would have recommended Abraxas bridge and Irish Tours for neck and middle. Taking into account the guitar specs I would second Tim's recommendation. The Holydiver is well suited to mahogany guitar bodies and should fare well with the Black Korina. It would also help to balance the rather bright Pau Ferro/Ebony neck and smooth the high end a bit.

Cheers Stephan

Thanks for the response  :D

Does anybody have experience with this pickup that they could tell me how it would be for Neil Zaza type music? As in how it excells and why it's the clear choice over other pickups?

not sure about singles but i am inclined to say holydiver in the bridge. nice lead tone and yet chunky and tight for rhythm. cleans are sweet as hell. one of the most versatile pickups i had the pleasure to play.

got a 7-string version i am trying to sell or trade for a 6-string to install in my 80s single bucker contemporary strat to replace a 80's jb wound by mj.

I dare not to question Tim's recommendation. He knows his pickups best. But, if you want something vintagehot in the middle- and neckposition you could opt for the Irish Tours or, with more mids, Slowhands.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
