You may find it a bit easier than typing.

But seriously, once someone gave me a demonstration of how to do the pickups in a les paul, I was away. A bit shakey at first and you will need to practice to get better, but it is not the black science some people make out.
Can't do strats to save my life though

Its easy - you can change pups quicker than you can change strings!  Just tin the wires (i.e. put a small amount of solder on them before hand) and do the same to the pot and switch and your away!

My first solder attempt looked terrible, it worked ok though!, you get the hang of it pretty easily.

The most important thing is that the surfaces to be soldered are clean.  Heat the joint then apply the solder, don't put the solder on the iron then try and drop a blob of solder to hold the joint together (that is the easy route to cold joints).

Oh, and clean the iron's tip between each solder joint.

I'm the suckiest solderer ever. I get my mother-in-law to do it. Yes, you read that right. She worked in a factory soldering circuit boards for a few years and she can resolder a whole guitar in minutes.

If you haven't soldered before then I'd practice on some spare wire before you use the iron on the pickups.

Be careful though, because you can burn out pots if you keep them hot for too long - I did so on a customer's particularly troublesome '78 GLP Standard. Not nice. Most soldering jobs are a doddle though - guitar shops are extortionate.
