Which Bridge Humbucker would be right for my rig?
« on: January 16, 2012, 02:34:37 AM »
I'm debating getting a new bridge humbucker for my Agile Les Paul copy (mahogany body, ebony fingerboard).  Right now I have a BG Hellabucker in the bridge and BG Bucker in the neck (really great pickup, but I'm looking for something tighter for the bridge).  Amp is an Engl Screamer 50 Head with Lopo 2x12 cab w/V30's, which I boost with either a Bad Monkey, Hardwire OD or a Danelectro Transparent OD.

I'm a metal rhythm player (thrash black death doom punk etc.)  Although my amp has 4 channels, I find the 4th channel is fuzzy and unusable, so I need a humbucker that is clear, tight and capable of kicking the 3rd channel in the ass.  I tend to change the tuning often, but I tend to stay around E or Eb, almost never tuning below C# at the lowest.  I don't scoop the mids.  I don't care how my bridge pickup sounds clean, I prefer using the neck pickup for cleans.

I'm thinking of either the Warpig (ceramic) or Miracle Man.  Would they sound alright in my rig?  Anyone have any other recommendations?

Miracle Man rather than C-Pig with the Engl. An alternative solution would be Ceramic Nailbomb.

MM. Did you consider the Aftermath?
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Yeah Miracle Man would be spot on in that axe. The aftermath might be a bit *too* clinical, though the mid grind is lovely. I love the growly low mids of the MM but some people think they're scooped (perhaps because the low mids are more prominent than the high mids?). I never found them like that, I boost the mids a lot in my sound.

Ok, Miracle Man.  That works, since my Hellabucker is lacking in high end.

Does the Miracle Man sound compressed?  Years ago, I tried the Rio Grande BBQ and it didn't last a day because it was so compressed.  Same with the Duncan Custom.

How does the MM sound coil tapped?

I just spent a year with a Miracle Man in the bridge of my guitar.  I don't like much compression and prefer an open dynamic as possible, even as hot as the MM is I thought it was perfectly compressed.

If you mean to say the coil split on the bridge MM (slug coil active) I was in love with it, surprisingly so.

Compressed yes but not overcompressed. Actually I had the BBQ and the MiM in the same guitar (the bright Les Paul Custom which now has Rebel Yells) and the MiM was definitely punchier than the BBQ. If you want less compression, look at the Cold Sweat.

Coil tapping works excellent in my alder bodied strat. The MiM is the only pickup in this guitar.
