Help me design my guitar!
« on: January 11, 2012, 10:21:52 PM »
So the story goes like this: I bought a framus neck (ovangkol with a ebony fretboard) because I' love the way they feel, and I've got a beautiful block of mahagony.
My first idea was to design a semi hollow guitar, but found out that building it would cost a little too much, so I decided that I would have to settle for a thinline telecaster, or at least something similar.

The thing that I like with semi hollow/thinline guitars that they sound more airy, more "alive" at least to my ears. So I would like to have round, airy, warm, dynamic sounding pickups, that can also handle enough drive for some alternative rock rhythm tone without causing feedback.

I was thinking about combining a p-90 neck (something fat sounding) with a tele bridge (something good for crunch), but a pair of mississippi queens, or a tele set are also not out of the question...

I've never designed my own guitar, so any recomendetions regarding the pickups that would be good for my taste and that would work well with the wood I have, the bridge that would best suit my guitar, body type,.... any experience with similar issues would be appreciated. Thank you

PS Sorry about my english, I'm not from a english speaking country

A pair of MQ's in a thinline, I would love that. If you decide on a telebridge i would look at something like the BG52 or the Boss. You could also think about a BG52 and a Mule-neck.

I like the BG 52 set, how does it compare to the BG 50 ?
But I'm still trying to decide whether I should get a tele style pickup for the neck or something less "twangy"....
I like the tele style bridge pickup, but not sure if I would want the twang on the neck pickup? Could the tele neck be fat enough? Will my choice of wood (mahagony body, ovangkol neck/ebony fingerboard) smooth it out a little bit? Make it warmer, or is it warm enough? And how is the sustain?
Does anyone have any experience in tele bridge - p90 neck combos?

I already have a mule set, so I'm not sure if I would benefit from another mule neck, although they are on a guitar with different wood

The BG50 has more output, mids and lows then the BG52 (I have the old BG50 which is now the BG52). If you roll down the tone a bit the BG52 darkens up. It's capable of doing lots of tones. You see this on various tele's. I have the BG52-neckpu and that sounds very stratty. I like that, but you don't want twang, so the MQ would be a nice one for the neck.

Thank you very much!
I think the neck is gonna be an MQ for sure, just have to decide if the bridge is gonna be a 52 or 50.
I think they both sound really good, just have to decide if I want a brighter tone or a darker tone. I like the fact that the 50 has a little more output (just to be sure  :D)

Last 2 questions:
I don't have experience with high output single coils, will I have feedback problems since it's gonna be a thinline body?
And just to make sure: do you think that the BG 52 will better suit my guitar, or is it really just a matter of taste?

It's mainly a matter of taste. The BG50 has a different voicing compared to the BG52. If you want to keep some edge, I would pick the BG52. That's already not a twanger.

You would turn a lot of heads when you take that to your country gig.
