Pickups for Gibson Explorer.
« on: January 27, 2012, 11:10:36 AM »
Hey everyone,
I want to change default gibson pickups on my explorer. I play mostly metal, extreme one. Kinda doom, death and all that stuff. I'm looking for more agressive and high-gain oriented pickups. But at the same time I dont want to lose in clear sound, I think it will be played in neck position mostly.
So, I'm thinking of Aftermath in the bridge and Cold Sweat in the neck. Unfortunately, I've heard live only cold sweat on some les paul, probably studio, though I liked it a lot. And I have no possibility to listen to aftermath somwere not on the internet.
How theese two will fit my guitar and music? Is it better to take sets instead of different pickups? Or my choice for mahogany is completely wrong? =)
Thanks

I've heard some great things about the miracle man in mahogany. I recently bought a Gibson Explorer and am not too keen on the bridge pickup. I feel it could be a lot clearer and the miracle man seems to be the pickup to do it! The cold sweat in the neck is a great option. I play a lot of really heavy thrash metal with this guitar so it's important that the pickups stay very tight under lots of fast staccato riffing! It cleans up amazingly well and is very smooth and tight while playing lead. Post some pics if you can! I love explorers! :)

Ah damn, it would be so much easier and clear if I'm be able to check all of them personaly. =)
I wasn't realy thinking of miracle man, so tnx, now I have one more option :D
What can you tell about nailbombs? Seems like they can help me with the wall of sound on heavy distortion, can't they?
Plus they are avaliable with alnico magnets, which can give me a nice tone on clean channel.
I wish I could buy them all and try different sets all day long for some months, but It's never that smooth in real life =)

I emailed BKP about a MM for an Explorer. They advised against it because the bass frequencies might be overpowering.
