Orange Dark Terror, anyone use it/know it?
« on: February 06, 2012, 01:26:44 PM »
Hi all

I've tried to play a Dark Terror this weekend, but couldn't find one in stock at my local stores (the ones I've tried). Rather frustrating. Can anyone maybe share some insight on it? Does it sound a cut over the other little lunchbox amps when it comes to metal? How does it handle lower tunings? Ease of use? Bedroom level? Band level? How flexible is the shape EQ?

Search for Rob Chapman on youtube .. Very informative..

(the lunchbox into a 4x12 will be loud enough for gigs)

I saw the one where he compares it to the Line6 DT25. I liked the Orange a lot more (although Chappers seems to be a big fan of the DT25).

Any more comments here from others on the amp?

Didn't play it, but you either love or don't dig the Orange-sound. I do. In clips the DT25 does sound decent and I would be my pick for a versatile small amp. I think the Orange has more character.

That was my thought too.

i shouldn't really reply 'cause i haven't tried the dark terror.i do have a dual terror though and love it. i reckon with an
overdrive pedal(in front of the dual) you'd get the gain of the dark terror but the advantages of the dual i.e 30/15/7 watts & two channels.it's not a fortune more expensive but miles more versatile.
there's nothing to dislike about it, err except no effects loop.

I only gave one of these bad boys a go for about 5 minutes. It was through the orange 4x12. It sounded blooody awesome. This is going back a few months, so I can't remember the nitty gritty detail, but the EQ was real versatile, and it was pretty hard to get a bad sound. Didn't give the effects loop a go, but would have liked to, so I can't comment there.
This was the time I was tossing up between a Tubemeister and the Dark Terror (not that I bought either).
I prefer this tone over the Tubemeister, if that helps.
Dunno if you saw the Jim Root Terror?

Yes, I did, I'm holding off any purchase until that is out too. I sometimes like a toppy sound with lots of mids, treble, but not too much bass, and the shape EQ doesn't seem to allow that, so the Jim Root head is very interesting for me. On the other hand, I've liked all the samples on the net of the Dark Terror that I've heard.

Dunno if you've seen this?

goes through the Shape range

OK, so I've just been guitar shopping with a friend, and came across the Mesa Mini Rectifier... Holy craap that thing is nice. I'm not sure how it's priced for you compared to the Orange (the orange is aout $600aud where the mesa is $1800aud), but if you come across it, I highly recommend trying it out.
It doesn't have that Orange flavour to it, but if you're after a high gain lunchbox amp it's worth a shot.
Again, really depends on how much it is comparatively.

rob chappers and the captain just did a youtube demo of the Dark Terror vs the Mini Rectifier. they said they will do an indepth review of the Mini soon and spend more time tweaking it as the Dark Terror sounded much better to both of them on this demo.

The mini rectifier costs more than twice as much as the Orange Dark Terror. I saw one with a 1000£+ price tag. You get a Marshall/Laney 100 Watt head for less than that in the UK.

Haha, loved that!

"Its official, isn't it? Its half the price and twice as good". Their verdict was really quite clear.
