Which BK? I've scoured the site and net ~
« on: February 17, 2012, 07:20:46 PM »
Here's my rig:

~Custom Mahogany/Flame Maple cap tele with Maple neck and Pau Ferro board (HS pickup arrangment).  Neck is a Kinman Woodstock (AVN-69) - not quite hot, not quite vintage output.

~2011 Splawn QR

Requirements:
~I'm looking for a humbucker that will play nice with the "single coil" in the neck and not lose too much volume when switching back and forth.
~It should have a clear and cutting tone with nice mids and tight bass - I have a JB in an similar guitar (but strat shaped) and it just crushes through this rig.

The thing is that this amp is very bright - and that's an understatement.  I'm looking for a pickup that sounds thick for single note runs and can still remain clear under moderate to heavy distortion.

As I plan on bringing an older amp into the mix, it has to do well with low gain amps without sounding thin and one dimensional, as many of the hotter pickups in my past did.

The Splawn already has way more gain than I'll ever need and it's phenominal in that regard, so I don't necessarily need to pickup to push the preamp lol.

What the hell am I after here?  Do my needs make me seem unrealistic?  In all honesty, I'd be tempted to go JB, but I already have that sound with the other guitar - and that one has a Jazz in the neck, so bases are covered.  This one has to go from Texas Blues to Heavy Rock.  No sharp or jagges highs or scooped mids!

Best!

Frank

Check out the Holy Diver, I'd say.

First of all, holy instant response!

Secondly, thanks for the suggestion.  The description seems to link it to the JB, eh?  Think I need something with less "output", so to speak.

Best,

Frank

The HD isn't particularly hot, in any case less hotter and agressive then the alnico Nailbomb. The same goes for my Crawler, which isn't so much hotter the the VHII if have in one my my strats. HD cleans up nice too and delivers good splitted tones. Anyway: have a look at the Abraxas (versatile, can do nearly everything) and if you want more PAF-flavour the Black Dog.

Holy Diver rules. Your description is right up the Diver's alley. Go for it you'll like it. I love mine! It's way better than a JB!

Ordered Black Dog.  Hoping it's got the magic.

black dog is an amazing pickup as well
a lot like the holy diver, but smoother and less aggressive, with a rounder top

Man, I'm telling you this Splawn is SO bright.  I'm thinking the rounded top end might help things out.

Good choice. Perhaps a tech can tweak the Splawn a bit to tame the brightness.

Was just advised to change my order to Abraxas.  Listened to tons of samples on YouTube and love it.  We shall see.  Will update when I get this guitar put together.

Recommendation by the BKP-team? The Abraxas is a balanced allrounder.

A trusted friend who's been through a few BKs said it's probably the safest bet of Tim's lineup.

The thing is, no matter which I choose all stakes are off with this guitar because it's as of yet nonexistent.  Something has to go in and establish a base tone to work off of. Reckon if worse comes to worse, I can swap the JB that's in my mahogany/zebra wood strat or the BBQ I have sitting in my parts bin if the guitar is too bright.

Not sure how shipping will work if I try returning it from California.   I hate this part of the process.

Thanks,

Frank

When I read your first post I thought Holydiver until I read that you don't want much output and need to tame a very bright amp. Then I thought Black Dog. The Abraxas would be good as well - a PAF type pickup with more output, strong midrange and smooth top end.

Cheers Stephan

I took the same route  :) though different voiced they all have a good midrange in common.
