Pickups for my Ibanez S570b
« on: March 28, 2012, 04:45:14 PM »
I wanted to change the stock pickups on my ibanez s570b which is a mahogany body guitar with a bolt on maple wizard neck with rosewood fretboard. It has a floating bridge. http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/eg_page11.php?area_id=4&data_id=245&color=CL01&year=2011&cat_id=1&series_id=486 this is the link for complete specs.

I play mostly metal. Thrash, Progressive, Djent. I also play some alternative stuff and hard rock stuff. I also indulge in some Pink Floyd, Dire straits type of stuff too.
For the bridge I would like a high aggressive output and a tight lower end. I prefer a great attack and fast response. I do a lot fast riffing. Also a thing to note is that the s series is quite different from other mahogany guitars as it has a very thin body.

For the neck i want i dont know how to put it but a tone that sounds somewhat similar to Joe Satriani and Vai(Think For the love of god, Surfing with the alien, Flying in a blue dream). It needs to have a great fluid singing tone with aggressive output. It needs to have a great sustain and harmonics. I also play some fast shred stuff and sweep picking type stuff. It needs to have nice sparkling cleans too.

I was thinking about Nailbomb or Painkiller in the bridge and Aftermath in the neck.

Bridge: Miracle Man, C-bomb or Aftermath. Would all work, choiche is bit a matter of taste.
Neck: Cold Sweet, does exactly what you describe.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Nailbomb sounds like a good choice, it should complement the guitar nicely and work for all the areas you want to cover.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Either version of the Nailbomb should do what you want with ease in the bridge. As for the neck, I agree the Cold Sweat should work well and I imagine the Holydiver neck would also be a good option as the 'S' series is so thin I can't imagine the mahogany having as much effect as in a Les Paul.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

I recently heard some clips of the painkiller that to in an Ibanez s470, i was impressed it seemed to go well with the mahogany body, i think it sounded better than the c-bomb to me. The cold sweat was also great.

So i am thinking Neck: Coldsweat
                          Bridge: Painkiller

And yeah i plan to get these with black battleworn covers

EDIT: Also can anyone tell me what kind of leg do i need? short-leg or long leg?

I was wondering if i can pair up the Painkiller with a Dimarzio Evolution in the neck without any problems?? Or is it better to stick with the cold sweat?

I can't comment on that particular choice but a short story may help. When I upgraded the pups on my Jackson I thought about using a BKP in the bridge and DiMarzios for the neck and middle because I really wanted stacked humbuckers for those positions rather than single coils. On the DiMarzio forum a guy suggested I go with the full BKP set instead otherwise I'd always be haunted by the idea that I'd ended up with something not quite as good as it could have been. Realising he was probably right, I bought BKP single coils and my only regret is that I didn't get them with baseplates.

Actually, can baseplates be added later?

I have mixed pickups in all my guitars and no problems, since I kept the original neck pickups.
The only problem is when output levels are too different.

So is the output on the evolution and the painkiller too different to cause a problem?

Also the more i listen to more samples the more confused i am getting between the C-bomb and the painkiller, can someone please help me with this?

I don't think so - pickups sound louder in the neck spot since the strings vibrate more in the neck spot.
