Named after
« on: April 08, 2012, 06:30:34 AM »
In reading through all of the pickups on the site I have noticed that most, if not all are named after certain artists.

There are some obvious ones. Black Dog - Page, Abraxas - Santana, the boss - bruce. some others are a bit more puzzling but I think I may like their tone if I knew who they were named for.

I need pups for both a strat style and les paul style guitar so if anyone could help with names on these it would be great:

Riff Raff - No idea
Irish Tour - Rory Gallagher??
Emerald - Think Lizzy?
Apache - The Ventures?
Stormy Monday - Allman?
The Mule - Neil Young? Warren Haynes?

Thanks

Jay S.

Here's my take, and I could most definitely be wrong.

Riff Raff...AC/DC

Mule...Warren Haynes...aka GOVT Mule

VHII-Eddie Van Halen

Rebel Yell...Steve Stevens from the song with Billy Idol

Holy Diver...Dio era Vivian Campbell

Painkiller...Judas Priest tone from their Painkiller Album

Miracle man...Zakk Wylde/Ozzy

WarPig...Black Sabbath/Iommi

Cheers,

Tom

I figured most of those out before but the AC/DC one is good to know. I just saw that the song is on powerage, pretty unknown album. not sure why they didn't make it something more obvious like TNT or dirty deeds but I don't make these decisions.

Appreciate the help.

Actually the Holy Diver was originally based on Vivian Campbells sound with Dio which is how it got it's name but it has changed and now the "new" version of the Holy Diver is just loosely based on the Seymour Duncan JB except everything about it is better.

I think that the name thing often confuses people when coming to check out BKPs.  To be honest, I know very little about the reference tones.

Best thing to do is listed to the new sound clips on the main BKP site - they're great, and it doesn't take long to get through them all.  They'll mean far more to you than the names themselves (most BKPs will cover an awful lot of ground, tonally speaking).
BKPs Past and Present - Nailbombs, Mules, Blackguard Flat 50's, VHII's & Trilogy Suite with Neck & Bridge Baseplates!

I agree the names can be a double edged sword, though I like the way Bare Knuckle name their pickups. I think the Abraxas for instance is capable of a LOT more than the name suggests.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Powerage is the best album AC/DC ever made!  :P

And - for those of us of a certain age - I don't think it's any more "unknown" than Dirty Deeds, High Voltage or any of the early albums.

Anyway, don't take the pickup names too literally - they just give an idea of the kind of "mood" each pickup is capable of capturing.  And it's also worth mentioning that the pickups aren't meant to be reproductions of the pickups actually used by those artists or on those songs.

Painkiller was based on Judas Priest? Didn't expect that. I always thought the Painkiller was a Metal/Djent pickup to the extremes.
