I think you would need more poles.

You can do one coil, but not both, depending on the switch.  Fender switches are no problem at all.  Gibson you have less choices in what you can do (no series/parallel).  However for one coil selection you are ok with both.  The only problem will be the middle setting and one of the switch.  To do the switching you want, you need an on/off/on switch, but a pickup switch is on/on/on.

Coil split is easy, take the red to the centre tab and then on to the normal pickup selector, and take the white and green to one of the outer tabs.  the black and screen go to ground.  For the selection you originally wanted, the only difference is that the red goes to the other outer tab (the lead to the p/u selector stays on the centre tab).

thanks phill, thats saved me buying another, ive done that now. however when i have both pickups on at the same time with the swithes set so that they are both humbuckers (ive split both pups with a switch each) the sound is really weak, it doesnt sound like the two pups as normal together.i must have done something wrong but all the connections seem good and everything seems earthed properly.i don't know what it is.does anyone know what it could be

That is an easy fix, you have to swap the black and the red for one of the pickups, then the two coils will not be out of phase.  You have 2 of the same direction and coils with the split, when you change you will get one stud and one screw coil and so get a HB.

btw, I'm assuming you are using BK pickups, otherwise the wiring will be wrong.

well one of them isnt a bkp but i got tim to wire it up with the bkp four condutor stuff.he also reversed the magnet so i could use a PRS five way rotary switch wich i got annoyed with because there is no option for just both humbuckers.

so if on the pup selector that im using as an on/on/on  i put the black on the outer tag (its a gibson style one) where the red is, and the red to earth, it should be fine?

Is it the centre position that is the problem?  If it is then switching will not cure it.  You can use the first option to cut one coil, but the middle position will still not be good.  The middle position is still single coil with on/on/on (you are conecting all the contacts other than the ground to the same connector, so only the coil which goes to ground will work.

I thought you were having the problem with the single coil positions, but with the pickup selector in the middle.

If you have a Switchcraft switch, where you can see the wafers you can make it on/off/on by bending the outside wafers a little bit, so there is no contact when the switch is in the center.  I also realised I gave you the wrong wiring for the single/hum/single, it should be:

red - right tab and then to volume
green & white - centre tab
black - left tab and then to ground

hope this helps.

There is a way to get both pickups on a PRS rotary switch, but you have to rewire some of the thin wires that are doing the jumping form one wafer to another.

it was the centre position for the pup selector that had the problem,it sounded all wrong,it should have been both humbuckers but it wasnt. you said to swap the black and red for one of the on/on/on switches so i did. it worked fine after that. but like you said the wiring wasnt single/hum/single. i'll apply the new wiring youve just put up and see how that goes. thanx for all your help Phil.

phill, i just tried the wiring you gave me before.it works as an on/off/on  with it instead of an on/on/on single/hum/single

I think you will have to go with the first set,  that will be single/single/hum.  red wire to the centre and to volume, green and white to either tab, black and screen to ground.
