Pickups for a JS1000
« on: April 26, 2012, 01:47:24 PM »
Hi guys,

so I got fed up with fighting my JS1000. The neck pickup is too muddy, the bridge is too bright and a little weak. Acoustically the guitar is stellar. It's really about the PUs here.

I vastly prefer the old Satriani tone over the new one. Tried my JS though many rights and I never get close to the old tone. Only the new stuff works somehow.

So my idea would be to have a neck PU that sounds spanky and Hendrixy and just gets 'bigger' when you overdrive without getting muddy. The bridge PU should be focused, like the Always With Me Always With You tone. Or similarily the top gun anthem tone, I simply love this one.
Which PUs for me?

Abraxas are ABSOLUTELY ALWAYS recommended for satriani tones. They get extremely close apparently although I've never polayed them in person.
If I remember correctly Steve Stevens plays the Top Gun anthem and it turns out that he also has a signature set of BKPs called the "Rebel Yell".

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Abraxas Neck and Rebel Yell Bridge to you or even just the abraxas set. The rebel yell is quite a bright pickup but it should even out in the Basswood body (correct me if the JS1000 is made of something else).

A Rebel Yell Neck and Abraxas Bridge might also work out nicely but I tend to go for Alnico V in the Bridge and Alnico IV in the neck. The other way round just seems to me like you'd be swappibg roles between the Bridge and Neck pickup.

black dog, neck cold sweat in any position, holy diver, rebel yell, emerald, abraxas, vhii, nailbomb...
most non-extreme alnico BKP humbuckers will do satriani pretty well in the right rig and right hands
his favorite dimarzio models are probably closest to the black dog set and the neck cold sweat

Thanks guys. Talked to Tim and he strongly recommends the VHIIs. I will report back how I like them soon.
