Strange how few BKP's are in the trade room.
« on: July 09, 2012, 04:16:26 AM »
I'm sorta new to the boutique pickup game and have been watching the "Seconds Out" area of this site pretty closely, hoping to land a set of something cool —and with a 'used' discount. So, a month in, I've only seen two sets up... and they're in France, so the cost difference after shipping isn't exactly a deal.

Has this always been the case around here? Or is this just a weird time?

Who could ever sell something as awesome as a BKP? Maybe that's the question haha.

BKPs don't often turn up in Seconds Out to be honest. My pet theory is that most people take advice from Tim and the BKP team before buying and their advice is very good so most people get the right pickup for them and so they don't generally need to sell them on. You sometimes see a guitar with BKPs up for sale but pickups on their own turn up rarely. I've sold one BKP in the 7 or so years I've had 'em and that's because I broke up a guitar I was no longer playing.

I have a set up in SO (may have fallen off the end). The reason they're selling is that they were in a guitar that covers similar sonic ground to a new one I got. However I *really* like the pups so I'm not bothered if I have to keep them. The only problem there is that if I do, sooner or later something new/different is going to have to be constructed to drop them into.

As to why they don't pop up, because when you get sets you like, you tend not to sell them. I tend to sell guitars, but keep the BKPs out of them to put into other things.

That pretty much sums it up for me too .  Even when I have some not currently being used, I still feel they are a treasure waiting to be re-employed.  I know their 'voices' by now - and cetainly relish being able to reach out for them to fit any application / Gig I might get involved with in future years.  Some I even buy and 'test'  to fit in a future guitar / guitar(s)  that I might one day be able to afford.   :)

Agreed, I nearly always return guitars to original spec when I sell them.

That said, I have sold several sets of BKPs, mostly because I no longer had an alternative use for them when I sold the guitar they'd been in (e.g. my purple/black zebra Crawler set).  I do wish I'd kept the Abraxas neck pickup, though.

And I've bought at least three sets of BKPs from people on the forum, either directly or through Seconds Out.

I think they do show up fairly frequently in Seconds Out, but it's true that it's a trickle rather than a constant flow.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I agree that there haven't been many used BKPs lately. But I have purchased many of mine used - from eBay and from two forum members here. You just have to wait until a model is up that you are looking for. Patience is a virtue as they say.

Cheers Stephan

Interesting replies, thus far. It's obvious that you all are a loyal bunch — and with good reason, I'm guessing — but being on a bit of a budget, I'm hoping something surfaces here in the near future. My Les Paul has been sitting w/ gaping pickup cavities for too long. :(

Yeah, I've snagged a few sets on eBay and Music Radar's Classifieds. You just need to be patient, but they do turn up.

Oh and careful on eBay, I've had a pickup advertised as a BKP that plainly wasn't. I returned and refunded thankfully. Most, if not all BKPs have the BKP logo etched/stamped on the back. Make sure you see a pic of the back of them on the advert. Most people who sell them take enough pics to determine if they're genuine or not.

I've put a number of sets up once they have become ex-demo in the past, but they didn't exactly get snapped up in spite of being well priced.

Chances of something like that happening in the near future?

eBay is usually the last of last resorts for me, but I have been keeping an eye out there lately as well. A set of Abraxas' sold toward the end of June that might've been nice... but those are #4 or #5 on my wish list.
