Nasty Dist. Pedal

OK
well my HBE Big D is 8 weeks away :( Joel must be busy busy.

Anyway, wanna satisfy my dis/od monkey on my back in the mean time.

So many darn pedals. As Big D is a boutique and the one I narrowed down to I just want summit cheap/instant grat. to use for now.

Any ideas/advice?

Looking at Line 6 Uber, Boss.

Anyone have/try Boss Me-50? Seems to have ALL their od/dis pedals inside plus ALOT more. Have found Boss products to be built very well in past so is this unit worth few extra $$$$ for all it can do?

I know it's more than the single pedal (i.e. cheap I mentioned) but for price of two single pedals it has alot more it seems). Am not really interested in "modded" this or that as Big D is ordered to cover. Basically want a "tide me over for now" pedal, just saw a cheap used ME-50 and seems a poss. with all it's extras.

Thanks,

What sort of tone do you want from the pedal ?

For a nice truely dirty but old sound the Tech21 American Woman is great fun (but expensive).

The zvex vexter Fuzz Factory though expensive is now actually affordable, but covers so many sounds.

MXR Blue box, with it's two octave down overtones is fun, but I hate Dunlop getting my money ;)

For early 70s Fizz try the Danelectro French toast (it's got Octave on it too), and is the only pedal that has ever go cause me to gain an audience in a guitar shop, it's fun and very silly.

Also try the new Danelectro FAB tone thingies they sound far better than the more expensive stuff on the market.

Theres the new berhenger pedals but they must surely be better than their modulation & compressor pedals which where at best bland.

Basically looking for Metallica/Priest/Scorpions type sound.
Cheap distortion for gratification whilst waiting on the Big D.

Try the fab tones out along with the new berhenger pedals in that case, also try the zvex as I have heard everything from blusey overdrive through metal to tripped out psych.

Also have a look at the marshall pedals too.

Basically try everything in the shop ;)

Nothing will prepare you for the bliss of the Big D, and nothing will satiate your need before hand!

I would suggest a Carl Martin pedal; they're as close as you're gonna get in the meanwhile, imo.

I'd say just wait...you can buy a different type of pedal with that money instead. As TO says, you'll probably never really care about the other pedal you buy, cos all the time your eye will be on the horizon looking for the Big D!

For what its worth, I had the Tech 21 American Woman, it was pretty cool. Capable of very thick fuzz sounds, but I found it wasn't very good for chord work (although, admittedly, not very many fuzzes are). It can be quite cheap too - no one really seems to care for them - I picked mine up on ebay for Ģ31, and although I thought it was ok, it quickly got replaced by another, and I managed to resell it for Ģ56.
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away...

Have a look at the Keeley or Analogman modified Boss pedals. I've got Analogman's SD1 and Metalzone modified pedals. I think you'd probably want the Metalzone for later Metallica sounds, but not the stock pedals.

I think the Fuzz Factory would be too messy for the sounds you want. It's a nice pedal though.

I had a lot of fun with my Danelectro Black Paisley but it might be too heavy for the 80's metal sound.

Well,
I took back a Dunlop Wah pedal I had bought and had'nt used (well outta time to take back but oh well) and talked to my friendly GC (guitar centre) employee.
Anyway, am SURE the Big D will be THE pedal, but for now, bought me a BOSS GT 8!!!!!!!
This thing is AMAZING!
Gonna take me forever to work it out properly but thus far can tell it's gonna be alotta fun :)

I'd say a Keeley Twilight-zone (Boss MT-2 mod) wich is really good in its ultra mode. Need a good clean tube amp.
A Vox Bulldog, monstruous tube dist, good sound, it definitly has that metallica tone in it.
Last one : a visual sound jekyll & hide but only if you got a GOOD tube amp to go with.

For fuzz it's worth looking here I reckon:

http://www.projectguitarparts.co.uk/Pages/electronics.htm

I've got his Electro Grid Fuzz, and it gets pretty fuzzy but can also sound pretty close to just overdrive/distortion. The whole range of fuzz available is pretty useful. It has a mid sweep control and a bass on/off switch. He does Ebay auctions (search for "fuzz") as well, I got mine for around Ģ50 which is brilliant for a handmade pedal I reckon.

The guy behind it is Alan Exley, who used to work for John Birch and apparently works on Tony Iommi's guitars.

I don't think Fuzz pedals don't achieve the modern metal sound as the notes don't stand out. Obviously John 5 used a fuzz when he played with Marilyn Manson which sounds good.
