Pickup, Caparison Dellinger II
« on: July 15, 2012, 08:59:37 AM »
Hi,

For a couple moths ago I changed the stock pickups to CunchLab/LiquiFire and wired as JP.
I'm playing through an AxeFx 2 and I'm not happy with that sound.
Every amp-model sounds same and very dull.

My other guitar is a Caparison Horus, using BKP a-NailBomb/Dimarzio FastTrack2 and that guitar sound is incredible good.

My questions are:
- I really like the nailbomb but I want to have a slight different sound for the dellinger. I was thinking of Rebel Yell set or should I go safe with a-bomb/coldsweat
- Wiring as JP (John Petrucci), do I have to order the neck with magnet reversed?

I'll give HD a shot. I really like the a-NB and this one is a close match, right?
About the neck pickup: I'm going to wire as JP, split-coil etc. Is emerald a good match? (I choose between emerald/coldsweat & HD)

The Holydiver is a fantastic pickup but it's a LOT smoother than the A-Bomb. If that's what you want then you won't be disappointed and it's highly versatile but if you want some of the aggression of the A-Bomb you might want to try something between the two.

Thanks for the info., that's what I suspected.
I think I'm going for another a-NB and an Emerald neck
The a-Bomb is the most versatile pickup I ever played on, can't go wrong there...

I have one another question. I have an Ibanez 7620, basswood, also crunchlab/liquifire.
Guitar is tuned drop Ab and the sound I'm looking for is djent/extreme metal.

I really like Bulb and Ola Englund sound am they are known to use Aftermaths but lately Bulb has been playing Black Hawks and Ola Lundgren M7 is his Solar 7.
This maybe will be the wrong place to ask this, but what will be best suited in basswood guitar =) ?
I'm not found of basswood, it's hard to find a good sounding pickup.
(All my other guitars are mahogny)

Cheers

Well I'm sure that Slartibartfarst42 will disagree about that... Having used both the nailbomb and the Holy Diver in the he has always held the opinion that the Holy Diver is more versatile and his favourite pickup.

I don't have any experience with the nailbomb but I love my holy diver to death. If you do get the Nailbomb, though, the Emerald may not be the best match. It is far less aggressive and more vintage sounding. The Cold Sweat may be a more suitable match.

You're right, I didn't find the A-Bomb versatile at all while the Holydiver seems to do everything pretty well, though I have always said that the A-Bomb would work better in mahogany whereas I had it in maple neck-thru. For something between the two, you could try the Miracle Man which does have elements of both. It doesn't have the cleans of the A-Bomb but does have a lot of the aggression in a delivery that is surprisingly thick and smooth like the Holydiver.

For your other guitar the Aftermath and Black Hawk both sound like good ideas but I've not tried either of them myself. I was under the impression that basswood was quite a neutral wood so I would have thought that most things would work. Perhaps I'm wrong.

the diver is a little more versatile, indeed

don't be worried about the extra smoothness
still a pretty tight and articulate sounding pickup and one of the best for metal and heavier rock in the entire pickup market

I agree entirely. There's not much the Holydiver can't make a passable attempt at and is easily the most versatile pickup I've ever tried but it's still certainly a Rock/Metal pickup. I think it depends how far he wants to go towards 80's Metal as the A-Bomb is certainly more modern sounding. If he wants something that is more that style then he'll struggle to find anything better and the Holydiver will bridge that gap between Classic Rock and more modern Metal very well. I can't think of a pickup that will do it better that's for sure. However, if he wants something that is only 'a slight different sound', as stated in his original post, then I think he'll prefer the Miracle Man as it seems to sit between the Holydiver and A-Bomb in many respects.

I'm not sure which way I'd go in his position. I'm still in my honeymoon period with the Miracle Man and I LOVE it. For the heavier stuff I play it's just incredible and I can't imagine a pickup I'd prefer but you can't escape the fact that the Holydiver will do so much more and do it all spectacularly well. I love them both but if I had to choose my favourite, it would still be the Holydiver simply because it will do so much really well.

- Wiring as JP (John Petrucci), do I have to order the neck with magnet reversed?

Yes, because otherwise the middle position of the toggle switch (both pickups split) will not be humcancelling.

Of course you could also order the bridge with the magnet reversed instead of the neck but not both at the same time - that would be the same result as both pickups in standard polarity.

The pickup recommendations already given are very good - I have nothing to add here.

Cheers Stephan

Not that I know anything about djent/extreme metal but the first recommendation for these always seems to be the Painkiller.
