Strat confusion
« on: July 14, 2008, 01:20:18 PM »
Hi!

I've just bought a new strat on ebay, and although it's not been delivered yet I'm already thinking about which bkp's to stick in it.

A search of the forum tells me that Mothers Milk is the best bet for what I'm after (think Hendrix Axis: Bold as Love), but that Apache's or Irish Tours would also do a good job.  However, what I've been reading has got me thinking.   Now the MM's are for the 60's strat tones (alder body, rosewood fingerboard) while the Apache's are the thing for the 50's strat sound (ash and maple).  My strat is a mixture of the two, with an alder body and maple neck.  What has more of an influence between body wood and fingerboard wood?

Body, I'd say.

But dont forget that each piece of wood of any given species can sound very different. Hell, wood from different places in the same tree can sound different. There are guidelines, of course, but its all down to each individual guitar.

Get it, listen to its acoustic tone. Thats the best thing

I wouldn't class it in that way myself - late 60s and 70s strats had alder body and maple neck as did strats from 1956 or so onwards.  You can use Apaches for late 50s tone or Mother's Milks with 70s era strats and they still sound great.

If Axis Bold as Love is your thing - your looking Mother's Milk to Irish Tour depending on the heat your amp puts out.

Cheers fellas.  I was a bit concerned that the mothers milks might end up being mis-matched to those wood types and too trebly.  If you reckon they'll be alright with it then I'll stick with the milks :D
