replacement pickups for PRS custom 22
« on: November 04, 2012, 03:06:34 AM »
Hi Guys,

I recently aquired a PRS custom 22, dragon 2 pickups, trem, 5 way rotary switching.

I feel that the bridge pickups doesn't have enough clarity or bite for the sort of stuff im playing.

I have an epi les paul with a SD JB in the bridge and have seen many people compare this with the HD, although i like the JB i don't want the two guitars to sound to similar.

I mostly play in Standard or drop D the sort of music i play is like TOOL, Sound Garden, RATM, Nirvana, Foo fighters, Smashing Pumpkins

i would like the pickups to clean up well by turning the guitars volume down.

would someone be able to tell me what spacing, polarity etc i will require.

also does anyone know of a way to modify the switching as i don't really use the 2 and 4 positions?

I understand these are neck and bridge single coil, do you think it is worth having something like

pos 2 - neck humbucker + bridge single coil

Pos 4 - Bridge humbucker + neck single coil

the main reason i don't use these positions much is the drop in volume and my thinking is that with one humbucker and single would give a slight variation on the full neck or full bridge humbucker.

given the above can you recommend me a few pickups that you think would be suitable

Many thanks

Jon

the alnico nailbomb will do the job and sounds nothing like the jb
it's hotter and much fatter than the dragon 2 and still clearer
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

I agree with Eric on the pickup selection - Alnico Nailbomb set should do what you want.  And BTW: every BKP will blow these lame Dragon IIs away.

If it's just the volume drop that bothers you it may be possible to wire the pickups the way you described. You will definitely get tones that are not used too often.

However, if I were not interested in the Single Coil tones I would rip out that 5 way rotary, put in a 3 way toggle and use the standard wiring. I found that I spend about 70% of my playing time on the bridge pickup and about 30% on the neck pickup. But that is up to you to decide.

Cheers Stephan
