Suggestions for Caparison TAT II
« on: December 28, 2012, 02:47:10 PM »
I'm about to pull the trigger on a Caparison TAT II (H+H) and up grade the stock pick ups in the process. The specs are as follows:

Body Material: Alder
Bridge: Schaller S-FRT II
Neck Joint: Neck-Through
Neck Material: Hard Maple
Fingerboard Material: Ebony
No. Of Frets: 24
Fret Type: Jumbo

I'm pretty much set on getting a Cold Sweat for the neck position, but with these specs in mind, which ceramic bridge model would be best suited for metal/progressive/technical/shred and solid tight rhythm playing?. I currently own an Aftermath, which is a great pick up in its own right and almost fits the bill except that it's a little too raspy and spiky in the mid range, whilst being a little too dry and metallic for my taste.

I'd like something which has many of its characteristics, only smoother in the mid range and balanced across the board, whilst complementing the guitars specs. Also please bear in mind that I'll also be up-grading the sustain block for the Floyd to a titanium one, which will obviously impart a lot more brightness to an otherwise already bright guitar.

Tuning wise, it will alternate between Eb and Drop Db.

With that materials I would stay away from any bright ceramic pups...I would suggest something with beefy low end as Abomb Holy Diver or you can ask Tim about alnico version of Miracle Man...
have CWP,MM...had AM,CS,VHII,NB,PK,HD...

the holy diver has a VERY close voicing curve to the aftermath (I did a straight swap), but it's more laid back, not as loud and smooth instead of raspy, so you will still have the mid bump, but the spikey feel isn't as evident on the picking

if you want more controlled mids, the alnico nailbomb will do the job

if you wanna stick with a ceramic, the miracle man may work well
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

I did ask Tim who suggested either an Alnico Black Hawk or a Ceramic Nailbomb. I'm currently asking his thoughts on a Ceramic Black Hawk and a Miracle Man.

Follow his recommendations, Tims knows his pickups best.

I just heard back from him and he's ruled the Miracle man out, so it's down to a ceramic Black Hawk or a ceramic Nailbomb. Tough choice! I may just end up going with the Nailbomb by default, since I'm too keen on its aesthetics.
Perhaps Nolly could chime in here?

It's a matter of taste I guess. Both will do.
