250k or 500k for the HSS set??
« on: February 18, 2013, 01:01:11 AM »
Hi I bought a set of HSS Strat bare knuckle pickup. neck +middle- Slowhand, bridge- nailbomb. And I wondering is that any best way or wiring that could use 250k pot for the neck n middle single coil pu and 500k pot for bridge humbucker, I am using 500k now, and found the neck and middle a bit bright and too open.... Thanks!

From the 'hot' wire of each of the single coils, wire a 500k resistor to ground - that will mean your effective pot resistance is 250k in the single coil positions only. Works a treat.

Thanks man~!!

May I ask more, if i wanna the 500k pot to become 280~300k, what value of resistor should i use?? Could you tell me the formula?

The formula for parallel resistors is Rg = (R1 x R2)/(R1 + R2).

With a 680k in parallel to the 500k pot you get a load of about 288k with the pot turned up.

"suhr hss" wiring might be worth looking at. you'll need a super switch though. it will give you.
1 - neck only - 250k volume, 250k tone, .047 cap
2 - neck + middle - 250k volume, 250k tone, .047 cap
3 - middle only - 250k volume, 250k tone, .047 cap
4 - middle + bridge inner coil - 250k volume, 250k tone, .047 cap
5 - bridge humbucker - 500k volume, 500k tone, .022 cap

Blimey, that takes me back 30 years to A Level Physics!

I like the look of that Suhr wiring, clever stuff.
