7 string pickup suggestions
« on: February 22, 2013, 05:24:01 PM »
Hi
I'm new to the forums and am looking for some suggestions for 7 string pickups. The guitar is a custom solid tiger maple body and neck/fretboard with a quilted maple top, and a top mounted floyd rose with a brass big block. I'm looking for a smooth, almost round sounding neck pickup, something that has plenty of clarity and won't get muddy when I kick on the distortion. Preferably a low to medium output pickup. For the bridge, definitely want a medium-high to high output pickup. Something that's really punchy on the bass, but is not woofy or muddy, plenty of mid crunch, and a smoother or rolled back top end. Both pickups will be coil tapped. I have 11 years of experience playing/working on guitars, and play a wide variety of music. This will be my first purchase with Bare Knuckle Pickups. Any help will be appreciated.

That's a hell of a lot of maple on that guitar so I imagine it's quite middy. Based on my own experience, I'd take a guess at an Emerald neck and Miracle Man bridge. The Emerald is very articulate, even under heavy gain and isn't excessively hot while the Miracle Man has plenty of punch in the bass and is the usual suggestion for a maple neck-thru guitar so logically is should be OK with yours.

"Something that's really punchy on the bass, but is not woofy or muddy, plenty of mid crunch, and a smoother or rolled back top end" MOST DEFINITELY Holy Diver, that's EXACTLY how I would describe mine. Cold Sweat in the neck for sure too, that's what's generally considered the smooth shredding neck pickup, but I like my HD neck for that too, its a little brighter from what I've heard.

I use that combination in my PRS and it's the best set of pickups I've ever had. Worked really well in my Jackson too. The Miracle Man is honestly very similar, just a bit more aggressive, a bit less smooth and less versatile overall. There's not much you can't do with a Holydiver/Emerald set. I only got onto it because Tim said it was one of his favourite combinations and he uses it in a number of his own guitars.
