New effects pedal(s) day -- MOOER EFFECTS content/clip
« on: February 27, 2013, 04:35:00 PM »
I picked up two wee little effects pedals today to keep in my gig bag for writing sessions and rehearsals, both by Mooer Effects:

- Ensemble Chorus
- ReEcho echo pedal

Sonically, they are fine. Here is what they sound like in the mix:

https://soundcloud.com/bena/an-epical-journey-pt2-b

Guitars are my Warmoth 'super tele' w Bare Knuckle VHII and Trilogy Suite in Nashville Tuning and my Agile AL-2800 w Bare Knuckle Riff Raff and Stormy Monday.
Amp is the EAST Studio 2, V30, mic'd with a Sennheiser e609.
Mic preamp is Focusrite.
Boost for the lead part at the end is an Analog Man Beano boost.
Bass guitar is direct into a SansAmp Bass Driver and Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone.
Piano is Cubase Halicon Synth
Drums are Drumkit From Hell VST

Sounds really cool
I've got a Mooer Hustle Drive, myself. It's a great pedal, especially as a clean or low gain boost.

i like that a lot.  i had a guitar in Nashville tuning many years ago, i must try it again soon.  the lead at the end sounded really good, was that the stormy monday?  it has the kind of sound that could be  a low output humbucker or a single coil

Nice, I think they're meant to be two of the good ones. i bought a few of them from china a while back... aside from the fuzz face clone (which is faulty, and which fingers crossed i'll get a refund for) they're pretty nice. especially considering what i paid for them, and considering how small and cute they are.

Really nice clip, Ben. It defenitely has some kinda Pink Floyd vibe going on.

I have tried four Mooer pedals briefly in a music shop. It was four drive pedals and here's my input from the short test drive.

Green Mile: Tube screamer clone, but I didn't really do anything for me. It's not that I don't like TS pedals, but this one was just not doing it for me.
Cruncher: I liked this one. Good crunch tones and it could actually spit out some heavy rock which I didn't expect.
Ultra Drive: Not my cup of tea. Pretty wide gain range, but I didn't like the tone.
Black Secret: Another hit. Great marshallish distortion. The two modes had a very different volume level at the same setting which I don't really see the point of.

All in all I find the cruncher and black secret good pedals when you considder their price tag and neat small enclosure. They would be great for anyone on a budget, but if you got more cash to spend I think there's better options.

the clip sounds great  :D
listening to your other clips now

I wish they had a buffered version of the reecho, as I need the delay effect to fade naturally when turning off

I have the eleclady flanger, pitch box and the super bender

the eleclady is one the best modulation effects pedals I ever tried
the controls make it very versatile

didn't mess much yet with the pitch box and super bender, but they do their jobs pretty well
octaves might sound a bit artificial, but the digitech whammy also does the same
I'm not used to play with shifters/harmonizers, so I gotta learn or compose something new to actually use those properly

I just felt that the super bender was messing up with my noise level more than it should, though, but I connected more pedals than I usually do
gotta try it alone or with just a few

yeah the black secret is very good, it's a rat clone (the switch goes between, i assume, diode and led clipping to be sorta like a normal and turbo rat in the one pedal). it is a massive difference in tone, but it's nice to have the option, kind of thing. I haven't tried the others, but as you said, the green mile is a ts, and the cruncher is a crunch box while the uiltra drive is a keeley ds1. Far as i'm aware. Most of them are clones.

It just dawned on me earlier today that the Cruncher was a replica of MI Crunch Box and with that in mind I understand the amount of gain this little red devil has to offer. Strange thing that MI named their pedal Crunch Box as the pedal is a distortion pedal not a crunsh pedal (at least in my understanding og the two terms).
I didn't know the Black Secret was a Rat clone. An old bandmate of mine hat a Rat pedal, but as far as i remember it didn't sound like the Black Secret and i defenitely didn't like it. Well this was 10 years ago so things might have changed...

the black secret reminds me of the rat i tried... i did try the "real" rat ages ago, though, so i wouldn't want to swear to that!

It doesn't really matter (at least to me) if the Black Secret is a clone of the Rat or not. What matters is that it sounds good  :D If I was looking for a distortion pedal I would be very tempted.

oh yeah i mean that's fair enough. i just wanted a cheap RAT as i don't have one, and i remembered liking the one I'd tried.
