The most evil pickup ever?
« on: May 06, 2013, 08:51:34 PM »
Hi all, I've had this Super Distortion lying round for a while - was bought off a local guy who said it'd started to sound Strat-like (thin) and he thought a coil was shorted.  It did originally measure around 6-7k so the diagnosis sounded about right.

Today I decided to take it apart and see which coil was the shorted one.  Well, long story short, they're both fine (woo!!!) so it must've been one of the lead-our wires shorting to the baseplate.

What is interesting though is that this pickup was bone stock, never been messed with and has '666' written on the underside of the 'slug' coil.  I wonder if this was some strange habit DiMarzio had back in the day.  Anyone else ever seen this before?

I have two other 70s Super Distortions that I'm gonna take apart too, just to see if its a one-off

They're both pickups with issues as well that I took a punt on.

I like DiMarzios, but their quality control isn't the best.  I have a Tele pickup somewhere which, despite being new, turned out to be completely dead - I think there must actually be a short in the coils on that one.

That is just awesome. I want that pickup!
