LSR roller nut -opinions?
« on: April 03, 2013, 07:58:38 PM »
Just wondering if any of you guys have tried the LSR roller nut? what are the advantages/disadvantages?
My main worry is that unlike a graphtech nut which you can carve to suit, this one comes set-so i worry about not being able to change the height of certain strings to be higher/lower when coming off the nut to suit my setup/playing. Am i worrying about nothing?
cheers!

I have this rollernut on my MXG Custum strat (made by Patrick Eggle). I replaced the orginal nut with the LSR and changed the tuners for Sperzels. Nearly no tuningissues anymore when I use the ABM-trem. The advantage of the rollernut is that friction is reduced to a minimum.

Never tried the LSR, but years ago I had several guitars with Wilkinson roller nuts.  They were all prone to intermittent sitar-like buzzing, especially on the high E string.  I don't know of the LSR might have similar issues?

Cheers guys, very interesting and different experiences. Thats the thing, Im hearing very good things about it but some people always add the 'but..' so it has got me thinking. The reason i wanted to try it was because the first guitar i tried it with played great, i also thought the nut looked fab. But i havent had long enough time with a LSR roller nut to have a fully informed opinion-i guess i wanted to try something different from the norm also. Thanks for the info though

I think that the Jeff Beck strat has an LSR nut, and I did have a good go on one a couple of months back.  Seems fine, sounded great, didn't seem to have any tuning issues.

Although I do find that paying for a decent setup seems to get rid of most tuning stability issues.

most importantly to fit an LSR : YOU NEED TO SHORTEN THE FINGERBOARD SO YOU ARE ALTERING THE GUITAR
Radius of LSR is set to 9.5" to suit fender guitars

Same with the Wilkinson, for what it's worth - you have to take about 1/16" off the end of the fingerboard.

The LSR is not buzzing, at least on my guitar.

i had a couple of strat plus's over the years, one with the wilkinson nut and one with the lsr.
the wilkinson definately had that weird buzzy thing going on and is quite ugly where as the lsr had no vibration issues and wasn't really an eyesore.

Thanks for the info Jonathan, its for the guitar I am having built so the luthier is sourcing it himself-not sure where he gets them from though, etc. Thats a very fair price btw!
