Good metal pickups for Gibson 2012-2013 LP Standard ?
« on: May 30, 2013, 11:03:32 PM »
So I know I have another post here about my gibson SG, but since you guys have been a tremendous help I thought I would attempt to seek some further assistance here with my other guitar.

I recently decided to get a gibson les paul either a 2012 or 2013, and wanted to get some bare knuckles pickups. My style is more pop-goth metal/ hard rock  type stuff. More rhythmic and groovey and not so much shredding. I wanted a good pickup for my les paul. I know nothing about les pauls, pertaining to how they sound (like how gibson SG's are dark and aggressive) I wanted a guitar with some more sustain and tonal richness, hence why i'm getting the LP.

I'm gonna be playing in E standard or a half step down. I was looking at either C-bombs, A bombs, or rebel yells. Anyone have any experience with Les pauls that could chime in on this?

I had an Abomb bridge in a LP clone some time ago and it's a real aggressive pickup. It took some time to get used to, but sounded great. If you want a Nailbomb I think you should stick with the alnico version. The Rebel Yell is often described as an underwound Nailbomb and it excells in hard rock, but can do metal as well. If you want a thick tone have a look at the Holydiver. It's very versatile, but some might find it on the dark side in a LP.
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)

My advice is that get the guitar first and listen to how it sounds. LPs (like other guitars too) can vary in tone very much. It might be dark and warm, but still clear. It might be bright and spanky, but still very full. Or somewhere in between :) Or it might be honky and and dull, in which case I'd never buy it in the first place. I always test the guitars acoustically first..

I think that is always excellent advice.  Spend some time with the guitar before rushing to buy new pickups.

Generally speaking, though, you're spoiled for choice buying pickups for an LP.  That mahogany/maple mix usually gives a more balanced tone than an all-mahogany guitar, which seems to work with a wide variety of pickups.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Rebel Yells sound freakishly good in Les Pauls. Just the thing for pop metal and hard rock too.

Sounds to me like you're describing Rebel Yells or possibly even VHII's rather than the more aggressive Nailbomb.
I've heard good things about the Rebel Yell bridge/VHII neck combo too, in fact there is a good chance that or a full Rebel Yell set is what I'll be putting in my Les Paul Standard pretty soon.

Once again thanks to all for the advice  :D

I'm considering these combos you guys recommended, definantely the nailbomb/vhII or straight a-bombs in both pups for sure. Even though I'm playing pop metal/rock, I still would like an aggressive metal tone

I guess you could think of some gothicy dark industrial stuff pop metal stuff. Think Marilyn Manson, HIM, that sort of stuff. Aggressive and distorted tone but still tonally and harmonically rich.

I'm definantely considering sticking to alcino's this time with my LP rather than ceramics, but I'm still looking for those bright high's and tight lows. What about a blackout/rebel yell combo or rebel yell/nailbomb

For the Vh11/a-bomb combo Im assuming the vhII goes in the neck right? How would you compare the VHII to the a-bomb in that same position? In all honesty though the VhII sounds beautiful, it seems to not have as much as output as i'd like. I heard the sound bites but I wanted some good subjective descriptions from people who have experience with these pickups too. As i'm lacking in the technical department when it comes to guitars

After thorough critical listening on some studio monitors, it sounds like the alcino nailbombs would go great with the LP (assuming it has nice lows and lowmids)

Runner up is a c-bomb or rebel yells. Damn those sounded good
