Is there any need to have a matched set of tubes in a cathode biased amp ?

Short answer - yes.
Long answer - yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssss.
Technical answer - if one side of the pushpull is drawing more current through the tubes and output transformer primary then the transformer core becomes DC saturated.
