Bridge pups for a Fender Mustang and Strat.
« on: August 03, 2013, 02:47:06 PM »
I have just put these questions to the BKP team but would like your opinion too. I’ve got quite a few BKPs as per my sig, and I play mostly Hard Rock/Grunge to verging on Metal, from Guns N Roses to more modern stuff like Fightstar or Funeral for a Friend.  Usually through an Orange Rockerverb 50 or a Blackface Bassman + pedals.  In my old(er) age I’m getting more interested in crunch/clean sounds and have recently got a set of the 10th Anniversary pups that I haven’t installed yet but am very excited about.  Anyway…

1)  I have a Fender Mustang that has HS configuration.  It came with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge, which is ok, but a little compressed and “muffled” for my liking.  My favourite BKP humbucker is the Nailbomb, though I only have tried it in 2 Les Pauls, never in a bolt on neck.  At the same time, most of my BKPs are from the contemporary and would like something a little less hot for this guitar, without going too vintage.  I was thinking VHII, but wonder if that might not be a little too dry. Also question the effect of the 24" scale.

2)  I have an Alder body, Maple neck/board Strat that currently has a Trilogy Suite set in it, and I would like to put a humbucker in the bridge.  Opinions?  How vintage can I go without getting overpowered by the Trilogies?
Am considering swapping out the singles too, maybe for Irish Tours, so that might widen the humbucker choice.

Cheers.

the VH2 should be good in the mustang. the 24" scale does of course effect tone - but at the end of the day a fender neck predominantly made of maple does give a relatively tight tone I've always thought.

maybe a holy diver in the strat? the A5 magnets in it sound sweet. its not exactly vintage, but it does sound good and organic.

I have a Holy Diver with a pair of Trilogies in a strat.  It is a great combination for a powerful strat sound, and gives a good split sound too.  They all work together really well.
So many pickups, so little time

Excellent thanks guys, I was thinking maybe Holydiver for the strat, and BKP Ben suggested that too. He also suggested a Black Dog for the Mustang which surprised me a little.  Not sure about that one, still think I'd prefer the VHII.

The VHII performs very well in F-style guitars with an alder/ash-body. It's not-compressed and therefore great to stear with your pickattack. Cleans up to a nearly single coil-quality. Highs are prominent, but not shrill. The VHII has a good amount of mids and bass. Great pickup for rock/hardrock etc.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
