HH, 1 volume, 1 push/pull tone wiring schematic?
« on: February 14, 2014, 08:42:55 PM »
Hi guys

I just had my alnico Black Hawks installed, with a volume and a push/pull tone control for coil split, but it seems like an error has snuck in...
Can anyone tell me if this schematic: https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/downloads/schematics/general/humbuckers/2_hum_1vol_push_pull_coilsplit_tone_3_way_switch.pdf is correct? Did Bare Knuckle perhaps change the colors of the wires or something?

What I'm experiencing is some kind of bleeding effect, I think, where I still have sound coming out of my guitar, when I turn the volume all the way down, but manipulating the tone control allows me to turn down the last bit of sound. This is when the guitar is in humbucker mode. When I'm splitting the coils, the tone control seems to stop affecting my signal. I am very confused.  :?

Thanks in advance!

Also, are the Black Hawks really supposed to SUPER bassy when adjusted to the recommended approx. 3 mm. from the strings? Like, SUPER, SUPER bassy, with so much bass that I can't EQ it out? At the moment I have the pickups 8-9 mm. from the strings. Doesn't seem right...

From what I can tell, that diagram is correct. I don't think they'd change their color coding without telling anyone either. Oddly enough, I have the same problem with my Jackson RR3 (no push-pull pot, but same bleed). I never bothered to crack it open since the bleed is very minimal and it doesn't bother me. It might seem like obvious advice, but go through and double check all your grounds as well as your switch terminals. I can't tell you how many times I've overlooked something stupid like missing a ground or soldering to the wrong switch terminal, especially the lever switches. Also check your solder connections and make sure they're tidy. Unfortunately, I have no experience with the Black Hawks, so I can't help you there.

Anyone else know what could possibly be wrong?

The diagram is correct.

Do you have a multimeter? If so, measure the resistance between the two outer lugs of the volume control. With the pickup still soldered in you should get a reading of about 8k when the volume control is turned up, an zero when it is turned down. If you get anything else than zero, there is your bleed - or lack thereof, since with the control to zero, the entire signal should be bled to ground.

If you get the zero reading, carefully check your connections. If you get a different reading, disconnect all wires to the volume control and measure again. Still no zero when turned down - the volume pot is bad, replace it.

The tone control should continue to work when splitting the coils. Since the pickups do have a higher resonant peak as single coils the tone control will work in a different range. If it does not work at all, there is a wiring error. Check and double check your connections.

Good luck,
Stephan

The problem with the bleed seems to be fixed. Seems like a couple of wired had been switched around.

However, the problem with the boominess is still very much present. The pickups are turned down really low into mounting rings, around 9 mm. Could this be fixed with new pots or different caps? Someone suggested installing a 0.047uF instead of a .022.

Any other suggestions?

Are alnico Black Hawks just a bad match for mahogany/mahogany/rosewood guitar? The guitar is normally quite bright - both when it had EMG's and when it had Creamery pickups, but with the Black Hawks just kill everything except the bass, when turned higher up near the strings.
